Kevin the kangaroo wondered who was the tallest and shortest of his friends. He decided to do some measuring by lining up with his friend Lyndall the lizard to compare heights. Lyndall suggested they use rocks of equal size stacked next to each other to accurately measure their heights. After measuring with the rocks, Kevin and Lyndall were pleased to have learned how to measure sizes and hopped off to find other things to measure.

2. Kevin the Kangaroo has been thinking about how
wonderful it is that all this friends are different
shapes , colours and sizes.

the tallest could

I wonder who

4. Kevin decided that he would have to do some
measuring!
So, he hopped away to look for his
friend Lyndall the Lizard, desperately wanting
answers to his questions.

5. It wasn’t long before Kevin came
across his friend Lyndall the Lizard.
Kevin told her what he had been
thinking, and asked if she could
help him.

6. What do we have to do so that
we can compare the differences
in our heights?
Let’s ask the
class!

7. Oh! That’s right! We
have to line up from
shortest to tallest!

8. So, Kevin and Lyndall discussed who
was tallest, and who was shortest,
and then lined up beside each other
to check.

9. I am shorter
than Kevin.
So, I am
short.
I am taller
than Lyndall.
So, I am tall.

10. Kevin was happy, now he could see
who was taller, and who was shorter…
But he still wanted to find
out just how tall they
were.
How might I able
to figure out how
tall we are?
Oh! I can use another
object to measure how
tall we are… but what
to use?

11. Grains of sand? No
way! They are so
small I would need
thousands to
measure myself!

12. What about this stick?
Hmmm… I think it would be
too big to measure Lyndall
and I’m not strong enough
to break it into smaller
pieces…

13. Ah! Rocks like
these would be
perfect!

14. So, Kevin searched and searched to find lots of rocks
That were exactly the same size and
shape. When he finished, he neatly
stacked the rocks on top of each other
next to Lyndall and himself to measure
how tall they were.

15. Can you help me
measure?
How many of these
rocks tall are we?

16. FANTASTIC
MEASURING!

17. Kevin and Lyndall were so pleased that now they
knew how to measure, they quickly hopped off
to find other things to measure.
