Measure 11 was created to protect Oregonians but sometimes does the opposite by punishing the innocent through false accusations alone. It makes it difficult to disprove one person's word against another's. Many falsely accused feel coerced to accept plea bargains for lesser prison time rather than risk longer sentences if acquitted. The author argues Measure 11 should be reformed to eliminate mandatory prison for the innocent, allow judges more discretion in sentencing, and ensure punishment fits the crime. False accusations can unjustly destroy lives both emotionally and financially.
