Eco-Friendly Status of Domestic Refrigerator Available in Bangladesh
Eco Friendly Agriculture Journal (An Interbational Journal of Agriculture and Environmental Science ISSN:
1999-7957); Eco-friendly Agril. J. 7(03): 32-36 March 31, 2014
Authors: Md. Nur-A-Alam, Md. Rostom Ali, Md. Ashiqur Rahman
This study was conducted to investigate the status of domestic refrigerators available in
Bangladesh. At present more than 50 refrigerator brands are available in Bangladesh.
Almost all of the brands are Chinese using aluminum compressors and low quality
refrigerants. These are cheaper than any well-known refrigerator brand. The common
complains of the consumers were delayed ice formulation and noise. R12, R22, R134a,
R600 and R600a were commonly used as refrigerants in Bangladesh which required 24,
34, 48, 72 and 96 minutes respectively to make ice. Their refilling costs and noise level
were 1350, 500, 1350, 1000, 2200 Tk/L and 80, 81, 72, 82, 96 db respectively. R12 and
R22 formed hard ice within 24 and 34 minutes respectively but R134a, R600, R600a
could not form ice so quickly. The noise level, refilling cost and complains of R600 and
R600a were high from both consumers and repairers. Noise level also varied upon

compressor. Repairers feel comfort to refill R12, R22 and R134a instead of R600 and
R600a, though R12, R22 are banned in many countries according to the declaration of
Montreal Protocol and Kyoto protocol. Conventional refrigerators could not be run by
R600a, the most eco-friendly refrigerant as because it makes huge noise. So repairers
refill the conventional refrigerators with R12, R22 and R134a. R134a is better than
R600/R600a and tends to be eco-friendly refrigerant.
Performance Evaluation of Modified Hybrid Solar Drier for Paddy Seed
International Journal of Post-harvest Technology and Innovation, Geneva, Switzerland January 2015
Authors: MD. ASHRAFUZZAMAN GULANDAZ, Md. Rostom Ali, Mohammad Mahmudul Hasan, Md. Nur-
A-Alam, Nusrat Jahan, Md. Mashiur Rahman
A modified hybrid solar dryer having capacity of 500 kg was constructed to carry out the study. Performance
of the dryer was evaluated based on the drying rate, collector performance, collector efficiency, drying
efficiency and quality of paddy (Oryza Sativa L.) seed. A 0.50 kW, 220 V centrifugal variac connected
blower was used to control air flow. The drying air was heated up in the solar collector and passed to the
drying chamber. Seeds were collected having initial moisture content of 23.86% (wb). Tetrazolium and
standard germination tests were used to evaluate seed. This study found maximum germination (86%)
percentage at 44°C and viability at that temperature was 97.5%. The germination percentage decreases with
increasing drying temperature and 44°C temperature is completely safe for paddy seeds. This study also
observed that amongst nine models Page model is best fitted model based on highest R2 and lowest RMSE
values.
Nondestructive Approach to Evaluate Defects in Elements of Agricultural Machinery
AMA "Agricultural Mechanization in Asia, Africa, and Latin America" ISSN: 0084-5841; AMA-Agricultural
Mechanization in Asia Africa and Latin America. 46 (3), 2015.pp. 43-52. February 2015
Authors: Md. Nur-A-Alam, Md. Rostom Ali, Murshed Alam
This study was conducted to inspect defects nondestructively in different parts of agricultural machinery
using the developed DC four-point probe voltage drop technique. Inspection is carried out by injecting
currents between the outer probes in the specimen to be tested and measuring the arising electrical voltage
drop between two inner probes placed on its surface. A DC four-point probe voltage drop technique was
designed and developed based on locally available materials. The presence of a defect generally increases
the resistance in current flow and hence increases the measured voltage drop. Artificial cracks were made in
different samples and voltage drops were measured to verify the developed experiment. Five, ten and fifteen
amperes of current was applied from a DC 12V battery into three samples: Mild Steel (MS) flat bar, Stainless
Steel (SS) flat bar and Carbon Steel (CS) flat bar to represent as materials of the agricultural machinery parts.
Experimental and calculated voltage drop values are very close to one another. This study observed that the
average resistivity of MS flat bar, SS flat bar and CS flat bar were 1.33 × 10-4 #-m, 3.91 × 10-4 #-m and
1.73 × 10-4 #-m, respectively in crackfree condition. Two simple calculators were also made using C++
programming to calculate voltage drop and resistivity.
