2. CURRENT CAMPUS INFRASTRUCTURE
All residence halls connected to Charter Basic
Television package
Currently one dedicated internet pipe 100mb via
AT&T Higher Ed NetTN circuit
Faculty, Staff and Students share same path to
internet
3. ISSUES
Only Gibson and Lloyd have up to date cabling
that can handle HD signal
Students are starting to request digital boxes for
their rooms (three students in Lloyd have done
this so far)
Buildings without cable TV cabling – Academic
buildings, Clayton Center, Fayerweather
Three major internet outages from AT&T in the
past two months (with no backup)
4. ISSUES CONT.
Student usage of internet decreases usability for
Faculty, Staff and labs
Site survey performed by Charter for upgrading
existing cabling infrastructure totaled $90,000+
Additional bandwidth cost from AT&T would
double our monthly bill (currently ~$3500 per)
5. PROPOSED SOLUTION
Facts:
Charter now offers business class fiber internet
connections on a large scale in Tennessee
Charter wants Maryville College’s business as they
are currently “at war” with AT&T
Proposal
Charter will lock in Maryville’s commitment to cable
television service for 5 years
Charter will install a 200mb fiber internet “active
backup” pipe on a 3 year term
Charter is willing to absorb the $90,000 cost of
infrastructure upgrades to gain our business
Total Monthly Cost: $3,450
6. TIMELINE
Internet – Christmas break. This is a 2-3 hour
project, requiring minimal downtime
Cable TV Infrastructure – To begin
immediately following graduation. Charter
estimates a 2-3 month project window
7. RESOLVED ISSUES
All campus buildings (less Court St, House in the
Woods, Alexander, Physical Plant) will have up
to date cabling allowing for HD services
Maryville will in effect triple it’s bandwidth
offerings by adding a 200mb pipe from Charter
on top of the 100mb pipe from AT&T
Maryville will have an active “backup” internet
connection in case of failure
Faculty/Staff will have a separate internet
connection from students, freeing up resources
