for

Haleakala
National
Park:
Without
a
doubt,
the
most
important
thing
to
do
on
Maui
is
to
visit
Haleakala
National
Park.
Accordingly,
there
are
dozens
of
tours
to
accommodate
this
top
priority,
from
downhill
mountain
biking
treks,
to
air
tours
that
hover
directly
above
Haleakala’s
10,000-‐ft.
summit.
The
sights
and
experiences
in
Haleakala
National
Park
can’t
be
rivaled
anywhere
else.
The
Visitor
Center,
at
an
incredible
altitude
nearing
10,000
ft.,
is
perhaps
the
best
place
on
the
island
from
which
to
catch
a
sunrise.
Likewise,
you
could
hike
or
horseback
ride
above
the
clouds,
or
into
verdant
rainforests
flush
with
flowing
water.
And,
of
course,
there’s
Haleakala
Crater,
which
may
(and
should)
be
accessed
via
the
Halemauu
and
Sliding
Sands
Trails.
As
you
can
see,
Haleakala
National
Park
is
a
great
place
to
get
active
and
to
go
sightseeing,
easily
worthy
of
its
top
spot
on
this
“things
to
do
on
Maui”
list.
So
dress
comfortably
and
warmly,
and
don’t
forget
to
bring
your
camera—there’s
bound
to
be
something
in
store
here
that
will
absolutely
knock
your
socks
off!
Helicopter
Tours:
Go
streaking
through
the
clouds
above
Maui
during
an
exhilarating
helicopter
tour!
Ranging
from
30
minutes
to
two
hours,
these
air
tours
will
expose
you
to
the
mountains,
valleys,
and
vegetation
that
define
the
island,
and
all
from
the
most
dramatic
of
angles!
As
far
as
what
there
is
to
do
on
Maui,
these
can’t
be
beat.
One
short
aerial
ride
will
take
you
over
the
West
Maui
Mountains,
the
lesser-‐known
of
the
two
ranges
on
the
island.
During
this
time,
you’ll
behold
the
impressive,
mile-‐high
peak,
Puu
Kukui,
as
well
as
the
dramatic
valleys
that
scar
the
surface
of
the
“Valley
Isle.”
You’ll
even
see
the
incomparable
Iao
Valley,
with
its
emerald
green
“needle.”
On
the
other
hand,
many
helicopter
tours
venture
out
to
east
Maui’s
Mount
Haleakala.
The
summit
there
approaches
a
mind-‐bending
two
miles,
and
is
quite
impressive
from
up
in
the
air.
While
on
this
end
of
the
island,
you’ll
also
check
out
the
Oheo
Gulch
and
the
tucked-‐
away
town
of
Hana,
both
while
communicating
with
your
pilot
via
two-‐way
headset.
2. Road
to
Hana:
Taking
the
miraculous,
52-‐mile
road
to
Hana
is
one
of
those
rare
treats
that
is
tough
to
match,
even
when
stacked
up
against
the
other
things
to
do
on
Maui.
Rich
with
switchbacks
and
severe
curves,
cutting
through
rainforest
habitats,
and
traversing
many
a
valley,
the
path
is
every
bit
as
exhilarating
as
it
is
scenic.
Due
to
its
extreme
levels
of
waviness,
and
the
fact
that
you’ll
want
to
stop
to
take
in
the
many
sights,
the
journey
down
the
road
to
Hana
can
last
from
two-‐to-‐four
hours.
Guided
tours
are
available,
as
well.
With
an
experienced
driver
in
control,
you’re
sure
to
stop
at
the
most
opportune
moments
for
clear
views
of
waterfalls,
crashing
ocean
waves,
and
even
animals
sightings.
Once
you
reach
Hana,
there’s
plenty
to
see
and
do,
too.
You
could
explore
the
quaint
shops
along
main
street,
or
relax
at
remote
Hana
Beach
or
Hamoa
Beach.
Also
nearby
is
Hale
Piilani,
the
largest
of
the
Hawaiian
temples
in
the
entire
state!
Even
considered
alone,
visiting
the
temple
is
one
thing
to
do
on
Maui
that
is
well
worth
your
time.
Whale
Watching:
There
was
a
time
when
Lahaina
was
a
major
commercial
center,
due
to
its
involvement
in
the
global
whaling
industry.
While
that
may
no
longer
be
the
case,
the
once-‐hunted
humpbacks
still
visit
its
waters
every
winter,
and
make
for
quite
the
attraction
if
you’re
vacationing
here
from
the
mainland.
That’s
why
it’s
one
of
our
recommended
things
to
do
on
Maui!
Although
you
can
surely
spot
whales
from
the
coastline,
particularly
from
December
through
March,
a
whale
watching
tour
is
probably
a
better
bet.
You’ll
board
a
luxury
catamaran,
and
set
sail
in
search
of
these
majestic
creatures,
while
guided
by
the
boat’s
advanced
navigation
system.
Plus,
rather
than
straining
your
eyes
to
see
them
from
Lahaina,
you’ll
get
within
100
yards
of
the
humpbacks,
and
listen
to
their
underwater
bellows
using
the
on-‐board
hydrophones.
Pools
of
Oheo:
If
you’re
looking
for
a
place
to
put
your
mind
at
ease,
try
the
Pools
of
Oheo.
Sightseeing
tours
out
to
these
tiered
waterfalls
are
plentiful,
and
offer
the
possibility
of
taking
a
dip
in
the
freshwater,
as
well!
These
beautiful,
peaceful
waters
are
definitely
deserving
of
being
considered
when
it
comes
to
the
question
of
what
to
do
on
Maui.
Should
you
come
to
the
Pools
of
Oheo,
you’re
not
only
going
to
want
to
bring
a
swimsuit
and
towel,
but
also,
a
pair
of
hiking
shoes.
Around
the
cascades
is
a
bamboo
forest
where
the
air
is
fresh
and
stress
is
entirely
absent.
For
the
particularly
adventurous,
a
hike
along
the
Pipiwai
Trail
is
a
great
choice,
and
it
leads
to
remote
Waimoku
Falls.
So
come
explore
one
of
the
most
extravagant
natural
landmarks
on
the
eastern
edge
of
Maui—take
a
trip
to
the
Pools
of
Oheo!
It’s
one
of
the
most
relaxing
and
awe-‐inspiring
things
to
do
on
Maui.
