The Renaissance began in Florence for several reasons. The Medici family, who became the ruling house of Florence, were important patrons of the arts and encouraged great artists like Leonardo da Vinci, Botticelli, and Michelangelo. While the Renaissance was already underway before Lorenzo de' Medici came to power, he was a major catalyst for artistic patronage. Some argue great artists like these were able to rise due to prevailing cultural conditions in Tuscany at the time, rather than just by chance.
