8. Variable & Monomial Degrees
The degree of a variable is the number of times the
variable occurs as a factor. This just corresponds to the
exponent of the variable.
Example: -5x²y³
degree of x = 2 degree of y = 3

9. Monomial Degrees
The degree of a monomial is the sum of the degrees
of all variable factors.
Example: -5x²y³
