The Santa Barbara Christmas Bird Count in January 2010 was a great success, finding a record number of bird species. Volunteers found 216 total species, tying it for the second highest count in California. Rare birds spotted included a Long-tailed Duck, Red Knot, Broad-billed Hummingbird, and Grace's Warbler. Orchard Orioles were particularly numerous. Numbers of some mountain species were lower than usual. The bird count continues to grow each year, tying for the second highest species count in the nation.
