The document provides instructions for loading water at the Rushmore-Nobles County landfill and unloading it at the Sioux Falls city shop. The point to load is exactly where the pin is placed.
When you turn left off of 220th you will immediately
turn left again and traverse the North side of the loop.
The grey area on which the pin rest is a concrete
overflow pan. You will drive over and park directly on it
facing to the West. In the next few phots you will see
two overflow pans. Use the West pan first.

inches from the edge of the pan.
Remember this is the WEST pan.
This position will line you up to
the fill spout as you can see in
the photo. The lid on the trailer is
about 16 inches in diameter so
you have plenty of room to work
with if you are off line by a
couple inches.

As you can tell it lines
you up pretty well. I
could have rolled about 3
or 4 inches forward but
this is fine. Additionally
you can use the ladder as
a guide. If you line up the
ladder with the post
supporting the fill spout
you will be pretty close.

The hose for the fill spout will
be suspended with a bungee
when you arrive. You will have
to hook the fill hose to the
spout. This might change but for
now just hook it up. After filling
unhook the hose and rehang it.

I have noted 2 electrical boxes in this photo,
the west and the east box. The west box is
the one we will primarily use. Each
underground tank holds 10,000 gal if you
empty the west tank and still have room in
your trailer then you can back up to the East
tank and fill from there. Each tank does have
a lid as I have noted. You can look into the
tanks and get an idea of how full they are.
Normally we will not need to use the East
tank only the West tank.

Once you are ready to load. The truck is lined up and the fill
hose is attached and lined up you are ready to start. And
that is all it takes! Press the START button!!!!
Now here is the thinking part. You will need a watch or a
timer on your phone. Once you press start you can run the
pump for 19-20 mins. This will put in about 6200-
6400 gal. That is the max we can hold. If the fuel tanks on
the semi are plumb full I would not go more than 19 mins.
You will be too heavy if you go over 20 mins. The pump is
quiet and you wont hear much but the water filling into the
trailer.
NOTE: If the underground tank runs dry the pump will
automatically stop, there is no risk of cavitation or burning it
up. If you do run dry, note the time on your watch, back up
to the East tank (You can slide the lid open to see if there is
water in it) and run the pump for the remainder of time left.
For example if you run for 12 mins and the West tank goes
dry then move to the East tank and run it for 8 mins.

Once you have reached no more than
20 mins simply press stop. Its pretty
easy. Let say you fall asleep and
overfill the truck. The overflow pans
will simply return the water back to
the tank. You can open a side
discharge on the bottom of the trailer
and allow the water to flow into the
overflow pan. It should drain and you
will be ok. Go Pro will be inserting a
sight glass on the trailer so you will
eventually have this as a back up to
help guide you on how full the trailer
is.

This is the West box, it just not a close
up. The door is held closed by a blue
lock. You can see it on top of the box.
This lock is only to secure the door. Do
not relock the door, just place the lock
in the hasp so the door does not fly
open

is held closed by a hex key
hanging on the left side of
the box (sorry no pic) the
door is a bit warped and the
hex key only opens and
closes the lower right latch.
To use the East box simply
turn on the power and press
start. Everything else is the
same as the West box. Fill
time is the same and the
pump will shut off
automatically if the
underground tank is empty.
As I said before you wont use
this one much if at all. Take
part of that 20 mins while
filling to look at it though.

Today I ran the West pump
for exactly 20 mins. Fuel
was at half full. I am
standing off the scale so
add 200 pounds for my fat
butt. As you can see its
close to the limit so make
sure you stay under 20
mins. 1000 pounds is only
120 gal so you can see
that it wont take long to
go over. The pump runs at
about 300 GPM so you
have less than 30 seconds
and you could be
overweight.

For those of you that might
run at night. The gates close at
about 5 daily. We have 24hr
access with the key on the
right. It is on the orange key
chain in the plastic box with
the truck key. It is the only key
on the orange ring. As you can
see it has a square head. This
key is ours and needs to stay
in the semi. Please close the
gate once you leave (like a
good rancher)

Before you go just make sure
the fill hose is hung up as it
was, the gate is closed, if its
after hours, and that you don’t
leave any trash around. I
know it’s a land fill but the
area we are working in is free
of any debris so help keep it
clean. So head out the way
you came and get back on the
interstate toward Sioux Falls.

18. Headed back
When you travel back to Sioux Falls we would like to avoid the scale at the state line. You shouldn’t be
overweight if you filled correctly but avoidance is the best policy in this case. Take MN exit one and go South.
This will take you into Valley Springs > Brandon. From there you can go South to HWY 42 (10th St) or you can go
North in Brandon back to the interstate. Which ever you prefer is fine just try at all cost to avoid the scale at
the state line.

continue strait past the city shops. Do not
turn on Ash St. and go up the hill, stay
strait. Off to your left you will see concrete
lagoons. They are below grade but you can
clearly see the concrete walls which form
them.

Past the light pole and angle the nose of
the semi North. This will making backing
towards the ramp easier and will keep your
trailer out the left side.

When you back up back until the
rear axle is at the beginning of the
decline portion of the ramp. You
will notice there is another ramp
to the East. The East one is closed
off with a gate and the West one
is open so you can only use the
West Ramp.

basically just a big
concrete box. Also as
you can tell There is
plenty of room left and
right.

Note the rear axle is stopped at
the start of the decline to the
ramp. Once positioned remove
the cap from the rear discharge
valve and open the ¼ turn valve.
The water will free flow out of
the rear discharge. This short
video shows a little bit of the
discharge. It will take about 15
mins to discharge fully. The water
simply runs down the ramp and
into the lagoon. The city stressed
that all the water run down the
ramp and not be released on the
level ground.
Slide your curser over the picture and a time bar
will appear in order to watch the video.

25. Unloading
Once the water flow
has diminished you
may then find that you
need to back up
another 6-8 ft. in order
to get good slope to
fully discharge the
trailer. I discourage this
when the trailer is full
just in case there is
some sort of break
failure. Once the trailer
is empty simply close
the ¼ valve and replace
the cap. Do not lose the
cap!!!! The city could
technically revoke our
inspection if we have
missing caps.

26. Unloading
Each load must have a coupon placed in this box. There is a
shed located next to the East ramp (look at slide 21 or 22
and you will see the shed.) This box is on the North side of
the shed. The coupon book is located in the semi with the
rest of the paperwork. I have not seen them yet but will
send photos of them to you with instructions on how to fill
them out. These must be placed in the box during
unloading. We can not put them in at a later date so take
part of that 15 mins while unloading to fill these out and
drop them in the box. This unloading time is also a good
time to catch up on your paper log book if you need to.
Once unloading is complete and you have placed the
coupon in the box you can then depart. Simply drive back
to Custom truck and park the semi. Fill out your paperwork
that you have left. I will show you some of that in the next
slides.

27. Each day you drive you will need to fill out a daily
inspection report (DIR). They are located in the clipboard
and have a white sheet and a yellow carbon sheet. Once
you have filled them out remove the white sheet and
place it in the blue folder titled “daily inspection sheets”.
These will be collected and sent back to Rapid City. The
form is self explanatory and the yellow copies remain in
the book if you are wondering what goes in the blanks. I
recommend doing this before you roll out. One reason is
you will see the space for odometer reading. This will
allow you write down your mileage before you go. On the
next slide you will see that you need to write down total
miles so having your start and finish mileage is important.
If there is a maintenance issue please note it and we will
get if fixed as soon as possible.

28. The daily paper log book is very important, this is
how you get paid!!!! The book is similar to the DIR in
that there is a white copy and yellow carbon copy. If
you have never used these before then take a look at
them when you can. Fill out the info on the top of
the page, date, name of carrier and address. Note
you only need Rapid City, SD and Sioux Falls, SD (you
should be able to copy the previous tickets). The hard
part is filling out the hour grid. The first line is “Off
Duty” This is where your line will normally always
start (unless you are running through the midnight
hour). You can use the ruler provided as a guide.
Drawn a line from the start of the off duty timeline to
the point in time when you arrived at the semi (in
this case 1 pm). You will then drawn a line down to
the on duty block. You will now move to line 3
(Driving). If you do your pre-trip show 15 mins for
pre-trip by making a line from 1:00-1:15. This
represents your time doing a pre-trip inspection.
Once you depart (on this ticket it is 1:15) then draw a
line up to the driving block of the time grid.

29. The drive on this ticket shows 1 hour 15 mins. The driver
reached his destination at 2:30. This is indicated by a line
going down at 2:30 to the on duty block. The driver is still
on duty just not driving. This might represent your time
filling the trailer. This ticket shows a 30 min on duty time
before departing again at 3:00. This pattern repeats itself
until the end of duty or driving. This ticket shows the
driver off duty again at 5:00. I hope this is not to complex
but you can look at other tickets in the book to get an
understanding. Below you will see notes that correlate
with each change in the time grid. Note the pre-trip at
1:00 and the depart SF at 1:15, arrive Rushmore at 2:30
and on it goes. The tic marks should help you line up the
notes with the duty changes. The column to the right of
the time block indicates number of hours in each section.
20hrs off duty, 2.25 driving and so on. This is a total of
each column. The total hrs. always need to add up to 24
so there is some math involved. I have noted 2.25 to
represent 2 hours 15 mins and 1.75 to represent 1 hour
45 mins. For me it just makes the math easy but you can
do it however you want.

30. The last column is the furthest to the right.
This is a running total of weekly hours. Being
all of us are part-time we will most likely
never max these hours however it still needs
to be filled out. We fall under the 60hr/7day
box. This driver was on duty a total of 4
hours which is entered on the first line. The
second line is remaining hours in the 60hr
week 60-4=56. The last block is total hours
on duty this week so 4 is entered again. If
you drive twice or three time in a week it
might read 8 (total this week), 52 (total
remaining this week) and then 8 again (this
number would be different if you drove a 7th
day)
The last box to fill out is in the top left side
and this is total miles today and total for the
week. It is not filled out here. The first box
might read 200 (miles today) if this is your
third day driving this week the second box
will read 600 (total for the week). You might
have to look back at your other tickets to get
an idea how many weekly miles you have put
on. This is why it is important to write down
Your starting miles. Once everyone has started you will begin to notice the
mile are almost exactly the same every time. Once complete tear out the
white sheet and place it in the red folder marked daily log books. These will
also be collected and hours totaled for payroll.

31. I hope this is somewhat clear to everyone. I really believe it is much
easier than it might appear with this power point. I am sure once you
do your first run it will make perfect sense and you to will find out it is
very simple. I will say again, if you need anything just call me. As time
goes on some things might change slightly but for the most part this is
it. We will be getting a debrief form as well, this will simply be a check
box style paper (I hope) that will alert us to any problems people might

P.S. – This stuff STINKS!! Its not hazardous but it smells. Be sure to wear
some gloves. I would recommend not wearing your Sunday best. It is
easy to avoid getting anything on your hand or cloths but if you do you
will smell it all day! If you have ever left grass clippings in a garbage can
for a long time the smell generated there is about the same. So keep
the wife happy and leave it at the dump site, don’t bring it home with
ya!
