Manual transmissions use a driver-operated clutch and have input, countershaft and output shafts, while automatic transmissions are self-shifting and use a torque converter instead of a clutch. Manuals are less expensive to purchase and maintain, and offer better fuel efficiency, while automatics are easier to operate, have higher resale values, and are better in traffic but are more expensive initially. Both transmission types have drawbacks, with manuals requiring more driver skill and automatics using more fuel.
