Advanced Topics in Offshore Wind Turbines Design
Offshore Wind Turbine (OWT) is a relatively complex structural and mechanical
system located in a highly demanding environment. In this study the fundamental
aspects and the major issues related to the design of such structures are inquired. The
System Approach is proposed to carry out the design of the structural parts: in
accordance with this philosophy, decomposition of the system (environment,
structure, actions/loads) and of the structural performance is carried out in order to
organize the qualitative and quantitative assessments in various sub-problems. These
aspects can be faced by sub-models of different involvedness both for the structural
behavior and for the load models. Numerical models are developed accordingly to
assess safety, performance and robustness under aerodynamic and hydrodynamic
actions.
Dependability of Offshore Wind Turbines
In recent years more and more demanding structures are designed, built and operated
to satisfy the increasing needs of the Society. This kind of structures can be denoted
as complex ones. Among large constructions arrangements, Offshore Wind Turbines
(OWT) are definitely complex structural systems, being this complexity related to
different aspects such as hard nonlinearities, wide uncertainties and strong
interactions, either among the single parts or between the whole structure and the
design environment.
On the whole, the quality of a complex system is denoted by the idea of
dependability, while for a structure the performances are connected to the property of
structural integrity, considered as the completeness and consistency of the structural
configuration. Even if these concepts have been originally developed, respectively, in
computer science and for aerospace applications they can be applied to other high
performance systems as OWT.
The present paper will show some specific aspects of the modern approach
for the design and the analysis of complex structural systems. In the first part of the
paper, the general aspects are recalled like the System Engineering approach and the
Performance-based Design. Attention is devoted to some important aspects, such as
the structure breakdown and the safety and performance allocations. In the second
part of the paper, a basic application of the concepts introduced is presented.

Si esamina il problema della ricerca di schemi strutturali ottimali mediante l’impiego di procedure evolutive denominate ESO (Evolutionary Structural Optimisation). Queste procedure operano in accordo con un principio generale di natura euristica in base al quale, eliminando gradualmente porzioni di materiale inefficiente da un assegnata struttura sovradimensionata, la forma e la topologia della struttura risultante evolvono verso una configurazione ottimale. In questo lavoro, dopo aver richiamato i principi
evolutivi e gli algoritmi alla base del metodo, le procedure ESO per strutture omogenee vengono estese al caso delle strutture composte da più materiali ed applicate all’identificazione di modelli Strut-and-Tie consistenti in elementi di cemento armato.
The problem in searching for optimal structural schemes by means of evolutionary procedures called ESO (Evolutionary Structural Optimisation) is considered. Such procedures operate on the basis of the general heuristic principle that by slowly removing regions of inefficient material, belonging to a given over-designed structure, its shape and topology evolve toward an optimal configuration. In this work, after the evolutionary principles and the algorithms on which the method is based have been recalled, the ESO procedures for homogeneous structures are extended to the case of structures composed by several materials and applied to the identification of consistent Strut-and-Tie models in reinforced concrete elements.

Structural Integrity Evaluation of Offshore Wind Turbines
Wind turbines are complex structures that should deal with adverse weather
conditions, are exposed to impacts or ship collisions and, due to the strategic roles in
the energetic supplying, can be the goal of military or malevolent attacks.
Even if a structure cannot be design to resist any unforeseeable critical event
or arbitrarily high accidental action, this kind of systems should be able to maintain
integrity and a certain level of functionality also under accidental circumstances,
which are not contemplated or cannot be considered in the usual design verification.
According to a performance-based design view, the entity of actions to be resisted
and the services levels to be maintained are the design objectives, which should be
defined by the stakeholders and by the designer in respect of the regulation in force.
For what said above, the structural integrity of wind turbines is a central issue
in the framework of a safe design: it depends on different factors, like exposure,
vulnerability and robustness. Particularly, the requirement of structural vulnerability
and robustness are discussed in this paper and a numerical application is presented,
in order to evaluate the effects of a ship collision on the structural system of an
offshore wind turbine.
The investigation resorts nonlinear dynamic analyses performed on the finite
element model of the turbine and considers three different scenarios for the ship
collision. The review of the investigation results allows for an evaluation of the
turbine structural integrity after the impact and permits to identify some
characteristics of the system, which are intrinsic to the chosen organization of the
elements within the structure.
Effects of Combustible Stacking in Large Compartments
This paper focuses on the modelling of fire in case of various distributions of combustible materials in a large compartment. Large compartments often represent a challenge for structural fire safety, because of lack of prescriptive rules to follow and difficulties of taking into account the effect of non uniform distribution of the combustible materials and fire propagation. These aspects are discussed in this paper with reference to an industrial steel building, taken as case study. Fires triggered by the burning of wooden pallets stored in the premises have been investigated with respect to different stacking configurations of the pallets with the avail of a CFD code. The results in term of temperatures of the hot gasses and of the steel elements composing the structural system are compared with simplified analytical model of localized and post-flashover fires, with the aim of highlighting limitation and potentiality of different modelling approaches.

Il tema della sicurezza, quando si parla di gallerie stradali, assume ancora più importanza, dato che un banale incidente o un guasto di un veicolo possono degenerare in uno scenario che causa un elevato numero di vittime. Ad esempio, il 24 marzo 1999, 39 persone sono rimaste uccise quando un mezzo pesante che trasportava farina e margarina prese fuoco all’interno del Tunnel del Monte Bianco. Nella prima parte dell’articolo vengono spiegate le fasi logiche che un modello messo a disposizione dalla PIARC/OECD, il Quantitative Risk Assessment Model (QRAM) [1-2], segue nel processo di Assegnazione del Rischio, e come esso ricava i valori dei relativi indicatori. Nella seconda parte dell’articolo, invece, viene mostrata un’applicazione di tale modello su una galleria esistente che si trova nel sud Italia, accompagnata da un’analisi di sensitività sui parametri che influenzano maggiormente il livello di rischio.
