2. Introduction
What relationship should bear and man share? Should we keep doing
what we’re doing or learn to coexist? How do we coexist? Man and bear
can coincide if we learn to respect each other and respect each others
space. The poem “Three Bears” represents what's happening because
we have not learned to coexist, in the poem three men go into the
woods on different occasions and encounter a bear, two of which had
cubs. The three men were all attacked. Bears only attack because they
feel threatened and will fight for their survival, this is demonstrated
perfectly in “Untamed and Uncut” a nature vs nature scenario where a
mother bear fights off a hungry male to protect her cubs. Bears don’t just
show aggression towards humans but also to each other or anything
that threatens them or their cubs. When it comes to bears I feel that
avoidance is coexistence.
3. Three Bears
Bears are not pets, they do not see us as friends but as threats
especially when cubs are present. Avoidance is the key to coexisting in
the case of bears, they are not the kind of animal you try and get as
close to as you can or try to touch. They want to go about their business
without us interfering. In the poem “Three Bears” when the men go into
the forest they did not check for any signs of bears and because of that
the first man “crossed the silvertip's trail” (8). In the first two situations
the men encountered a mother bear and her cubs as read “old sow and
cubs, and she charged” (9) and “three bears, the fatal number” (26). The
mother bears in these circumstances felt endangered and did what they
had to, to protect themselves and their cubs. If the men had bothered to
look for traces of bears they might have been able to avoid being
attacked, for we are not at “home” in their territory we are a “hazard”.
4. Untamed and Uncut
“Untamed and Uncut” shows us how bears will also attack other bears
when they feel at risk. In the video a starving male bear smells the food
that a mother bear and her cubs are eating down river, and proceeds
towards them with a plan to kill them if needed and eat their food. When
the mother bear sees him headed in the direction of her cubs she is
enraged and fights him off. This attests to how bears will do anything
with the motivation of survival, including attacking anyone and anything
that might jeopardize that. Which once again illustrates that avoidance is
coexisting.
5. Conclusion
In conclusion steering clear of bears is the best way to keep yourself
safe and show bears the respect they deserve. Although they are
beautiful creatures we should not go looking for them but instead leave
them alone. If you must venture into known bear territory watch for
tracks, scat and claw marks on trees and keep well away from that
direction. The greatest way to have man and bear is to recognize that
bears want to be left alone, for avoidance is the key to coexistence.
