Kali Vinod Tiwari suffered from paraplegia at age 3 and faced many hardships, but was inspired by his father to get several advanced degrees. He started various businesses to help support himself and other disabled people. Through research, he invented India's first auto-tri-wheeler for disabled people. His inventions and advocacy helped improve mobility and independence for the disabled. He received many awards over decades of work helping and representing the disabled community.

Kali VinodTiwari sufferedastroke of paraplegia,whichincapacitatedhislegsatthe age of three.
MisfortunesneverdeterredKali VinodTiwari.HismotherMrs.Maheswari Devi diedwhenhe wasthree,
shortlyafterthe paraplegiaattack.He crawledon all the fourstill the age of fourteenwhenhe was
strongenoughto handle the crutchesandwalk.HisfatherMr. Ram NarainTiwari,a retiredschool
headmasterwasthe mainsource of inspiration forhim.HisFathergothimadmittedtoan ashramrun
by Swami Nardanand.He studiedSanskrit,andtookShastri degree fromBenarasuniversity,toadopta
careerof religiouspreacherasdesiredbyhisfather.Fromthe age of elevenwhenhe wasadmittedto
ashram,till the age of fifteenhe hadacquiredthe knowledgeandskill forgivingreligiousdiscoursesto
the gatheringsfortwoto three hours.
He losthisfatherat the age of fifteenandthisvirtuallysnappedhisrelationwiththe ashramandcareer
of a spiritual preacher.Ashisurge todo researchandbe useful forotherslike himbroughthimtohis
nextphase of life of runningaworkshopandpursuingresearchinmobilitysectorpertainingtodisableds
and ultimatelysucceededdevelopingIndia’s firstauto-tri-wheelerfordisabled.He possessesan
unflaggingzeal forprogressandforoutinghisbestfootforward,He is relentlesslyinpursuitof
knowledge.Thispursuitof knowledgeledhimtoacquire anLLB degree anddegreesof Mastersof
Arts(M.A) inSanskrit,Hindi andEnglish,all infirstdivision.He alsoundertooktrainingInIndustrial
Management,Industrial Safety,AndInternalAndOverseasMarketingFromGovernmentInstitutions.He
acquiredall the educational qualificationsandprofessionalskillsfacinghardshipsdue tohissevere
disability.Atthe age of twentyhe starteda small steel furniture makingunitatKanpurwhichhe
successfullyranforfewyearsHe had to close downhisunitbecause of breakneckcompetitionfrom
othershavinglarge workforce andcapital resources.He neithergothurt norgot frustratedonclosinghis
unitand immediatelylaunchedanotherproject.Thistime he tooktorepairingof scootersand
motorcycles.Inthisworkshophe all setwithhisownideasof researchandfor doingsomething
worthwhile forpeople like himhe embarkedonanambitiousprojectof makinganideal autotricycle.
Whichtook three yearsof hard workand researchbefore he couldfabricate thisautotricycle powered
by a small 35 cc engine withproperhandcontrolsandsafelycruisingspeeds.InMarch1980 the vehicle
was inauguratedonworlddayof disabled.Hisworkwasdisplayedandpraisedatvariousgovernment
and social welfare organizations.The vehicle wasdemonstratedat68th sessionof Indianscience
congressinVaranasi,andearnedappreciationof scientists.He hadalsoformedDisabled’sClubof India
in1976 and entirelyrunbydisabledpersons.In1981 on internationalyearof Disabled’he organized
firsteverrallyonauto tri cyclesfromKanpurto Delhi.Where he washonoredbyCentral ministersand
earnedappreciationof formerPrime MinisterMrs.IndiraGandhi.
In 1982 Mr. V.PSinghthe thenchief ministerUPhonoredhimforhisinventionandUPgovernorCPN
Singhgave hima goldmedal.He also receivedSyedAkhthargoldmedal forsavinglife andhonorof

2. fellowdisabledbeings.He gotstate award in1983 and National awardin1984. Inthe same yearhe got
a red cross medal entitledViklangVibhushanfromIndianredcross.
Andthenthere isthe womanbehindthe manwithaninterestingstory.Mrs.Rama Tiwari,whowas
workingina multinationalcompanyinBengaluru,wasattractedbyTiwari’sfame spreadall acrossthe
country.She marriedhimin1985 and both decidedtoworktogetheranddedicate theirlife forthe
disabled.
In 1990 he wenton an epicjourneytoalmosteverycornerof the country.He drove hiscustomized
vehiclesacrossIndia’sdangeroushighwaysthroughFourteenstatestostudythe self mobilityproblems
of disabledpersonsindifferentconditionsandcoveredaworldrecordmakingdistance of 12280 kms
.Duringthisjourneyhe discoveredthatapartfrom self mobilitythere isagreataccessibilityproblem
plaguagingthe disabledpeople asall the structures,placesare inaccessible tothem..
All throughthese yearshe continueddoingcomprehensive researchondifferentkindof disabilitiesand
developedmore than50 modelsforalmosteverykindof disabilities.Hischildrenwhogrew watching
theirfather’sfight againstdisability –joinedforceswithhim.HisdaughterMalavikatiwari developeda
firsteverfullyfootdrivenscooterforpeople whohave nohands(UpperLimbdisability).She wonGold
medal inIndia,She alsorepresentedIndiainthe prestigiousInternationalscience andengineeringfairin
Arizona,USA.Later she wonNational award- 2005 for the same.His sonMukundTiwari developeda
multifunctional self mobilityandphysiotherapysystemforSpasticchildren.Whichalsogota goldmedal
inIndia,and hisworkwas displayedatInternational science andengineeringfairinIndianapolis,USA.
He wasawardedthe National awardin2006.Inspiredby Mr. Tiwari , hiswhole familyisengagedinone
wayor the otherfor the welfare of disabledpersons.Itissignificanttonote thather wife Ramatiwari is
a special educatorof repute forspasticand mentallyretardedchildrenatan army school;andperhaps
thisisthe firstfamilyof five inIndiaof whichthree are national awardees.
In 2007 Mr. Tiwari was giventhe CavinCare Awardof Eminence inrecognitionof “excellenceachieved
againstall odds”.At presenthe isengagedinhisworkwithmeagerresourcesathisdisposal withoutaid
of anyagencyand prefertotake helpof disabledonly,topromote hisprojectsandprogrammes.He
doesnotcrave for anybody’scompassionorcharitymuchlesspitybecause he neversufferedself pity
duringall hislife.Atpresenthe isalsoengagedinaBarrier free awarenessmovementfordisabledat
Kanpurwhichhe has launchedinDecember2008. Soon he isgoingto launchthismovementall across
the country.
On 19th January,2010, he wasconferredwithIBN 7 Bajaj AllianzSuperIdolsAward(InSpecial Idol
Makers Category) atMumbai.
