this devastating economic and social crisis that was at hand. People had understandably lost
faith in the government and potentially in the capability of democratic rule itself.
Consequently, President Roosevelt’s main task once he became President was to
demonstrate how the government could be utilized to cope with this national crisis and
subsequently restore the people’s faith in both the government and in the democratic rule
