Mustafa Kemal Atatürk was born in 1881 in the Ottoman Empire and went on to become a military officer and leader of Turkish War of Independence. He helped establish the Grand National Assembly of Turkey in 1920 and was selected as its president. Atatürk led Turkey to victory in the Turkish War of Independence and oversaw the founding of the Republic of Turkey in 1923, becoming its first president. He implemented extensive modernizing reforms that transformed Turkey into a secular, modern nation and is regarded as the founder of modern Turkey. Atatürk died in 1938 and is still revered as the father of his country.
