My Singing: A Genetic Gift and Lifelong Passion
1. My singing:
I do strongly believe that you either have it in you or you don’t! It is simply genetic. If you
have the gene, you can sing and then add training, you excel in it. If you don’t have the gene,
you can never sing, no matter how much efforts you put in!
I have it in me. Both my parents could sing, my father played sitar, mu mom played violin.
So could all my relatives. They all have sur and taal in them. My brothers are excellent
singers and Ajit before his accident, could play virtually any melody instrument,
particularly, mouth organ and flute.
I sang on radio when I was 10. I still know the song, “Dhartivarachi mule amhi tar
dharativarachi mule, devagharachi amhi phule”. I remember sitting with a lot of people and
listening to my song on Mumbai A channel. After that, I almost forgot that I could sing till I
joined medical school.
In the first year, my anatomy dissection partner was Arvind Bhave, who was an excellent
singer. Along with another singer Vinod Sakharani, they become part of a newly formed
group called ORGY (Orchestra of GS youngsters), which became an instant success. I wasn’t
interested but on behest of Bhave, got introduced in the second year. I became an overnight
success and suddenly everybody wanted to know me. Every passing year, my stardom
increased in the college and within a couple of years, one of the professional guitarists, Ajay
Madan asked me whether I wanted to become a professional singer. I was fascinated with
the idea of doing something, which I liked and getting paid for it too!
During those days, I won the College talent competition, all India medical golden voice
competition and sang in many orchestras on a regular basis such as Gunjan, Yaadonki
Mehefil, and Melody etc. I went on a Europe tour as Kishore Kumar with stalwarts like
Manna De, and Talat mehmood. I then moved to London and surprisingly got busier.
In 90s in London, I was a part of virtually every group and till date have done
approximately 1000 shows all over the world. I was invited to sing by Zee for the launch of
their channel in UK and the music Director Biddu spotted me. I then became part of the
Biddu Orchestra and sang a title song of his Album “Farebi” (Polygram) I also sang another
duet with Swati Pohankar in that Album. One of my biggest achievements was to sing with
Asha Bhosle in an Album “Asha Once more” (HMV). I sang two duets with her. Success was
coming without me trying for it. Virgin Records came hunting for me and signed me for
three albums. I sang for a film, I sang for the Royals and Queen.
There was one time when I had to choose between the medical or singing career, as it was
rather difficult to keep up with both. I concentrated on my medical career but till date still
keep on singing whenever the opportunity arises. Recently I had organized a show called
Champions live to release the poetry album of Ramesh Tendulkar, Sachin Tendulkar’s dad.
Both the masters, Sunil Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar were present and I sang Kishore
kumar’s songs in the first half. Similarly, I sang with Pandit Hridaynath Mangeshkar in his
live concert. I sang in MIFTA, which was a Marathi international film award function.
2. I have now set up a professional audio system in my house. But singing will always be like a
long lost girlfriend whom I still love…
