8th Grade Global Studies Course
Teacher's Guide
Food for Thought is a FREE curriculum full
of great lessons and maps connecting
agriculture with geography.
This document provides effective ways to
teach the curriculum required by the 2011
Minnesota Standards in Social Studies with
MAGE recommended units and resources.
The MAGE Geoliteracy team has developed
assessment models and supporting
curriculum in the areas of: Cultural,
Economic, Environmental, Political,
Population, Urban and General Geography.
MAPPING Minnesota is a collection of
lessons developed to incorporate selected
maps from the Minnesota Historical
Society’s exhibit, ‘Minnesota on the Map:’
Four Centuries of Maps from the MHS
Collection.
Veritus Caput is an educational website to
accompany the MAGE film project about
Minnesota history and the science and
politics involved in exploring and defining
the “True Source” of the Mississippi River
Headwaters.
This K-12 curriculum is designed to enable
educators to teach the Minnesota State
graduation requirements in geography.
GEOFEST
MAGE sponsors this Minnesota conference in
order to bring together social science educators
who share a special passion for Geography.
Considered the premier professional
development event in Minnesota for K-12
Geography educators it includes 30 concurrent
sessions held throughout the day. GEOFEST
is held on a Saturday in late October on the
campus of Macalester College.
Professional Development
Workshops + Summer Institutes
Each year MAGE sponsors a series of
professional development workshops
and summer institutes designed to enhance
teachers’ knowledge of geography,
geotechnology, pedagogy and learning
technology. The institutes are normally held at
Macalester College but the workshops are held
in different parts of the state. The topics of the
programs vary from year to year.
Giant Map Tour
Teachers may participate in MAGE’s Giant Map
projects. MAGE will host the Giant Map of
Africa during January and February in 2017.
Schools may apply to borrow the Giant Map for
one day loans and will be selected depending
on availability. MAGE also offers teachers the
opportunity to borrow a Giant Map of Minnesota
along with a set of teaching materials that were
developed by Minnesota Teachers.
GIS Mapping Contest
In Cooperation with the MN Department of
Education and the MN LIS/GIS Organization,
MAGE sponsors a GIS Mapping Contest.
Minnesota public, private, or homeschooled
students are all eligible to enter the contest.
Original Minnesota based maps may be
submitted individually or as a team of
two students. Entrants must use ArcGIS Online
to create an original map. The contest will take
place March of 2017.
