耶穌開始傳教使命時首先召叫一批門徒，並訓練他們為使將來繼續他的救人使命。門徒們被召叫之後立刻放下手中的一切、離開自己的家人跟隨了他。但在瑪竇福音八21出現一位門徒，要求跟隨耶穌之前先完成一件事：「主，請許我先去埋葬我的父親。 」但耶穌卻給他嚴厲的答案：「你跟隨我罷!任憑死人去埋葬他們的死人!」
為今日生活於中國文化背景，耶穌的答案帶來極大的困難和衝擊。這一教導不但難以被居住在第一世紀巴勒斯坦的猶太人所接受，它也似乎與世界各地的華人社會所廣泛接受的文化價值觀念背道而馳。祖先的尊敬是中國文化的一個重要概念和儀式，以表達他們的孝道。自古以來，一個特別的日子被指定為掃墓和尊敬祖先。雖然許多古老的傳統已被工業社會的影響而被忽視，但“清明節”在現代華人社會中卻保留了它的重要性。大多數家庭仍然堅持自己文化的根基，在這特殊的日子掃墓和祭拜儀式。

亨格爾（Hengel）認為，耶穌挑釁性的答案只能從他召叫門徒來跟隨他的行動才能找到答案。耶穌對他的跟隨者定下了嚴肅的要求，為能完全跟隨他，一定要與自己家人斷絕家庭關係。耶穌的答案似乎反對了一般猶太人的習俗。亨格爾主張，為了跟隨他迎接即將來臨末世性的天國，耶穌提出了一條必須走的新路線，即是斷絕與梅瑟法律的要求和猶太習俗的關係。這召叫要求一個代價：斷絕所有的家庭關係。亨格爾指出耶穌這段話的背景可在他論述末世事件中（瑪十34-36）找到。「那時，人脫離自己的父親，女兒脫離自己的母親，兒媳脫離自己的婆母；…誰愛父親或母親超過我，不配是我的；誰愛兒子或女兒超過我，不配是我的」。耶穌所帶來的不是和平，而是家庭的分裂。
早期猶太人和一些現代學者所聲稱耶穌違背梅瑟法律（不遵守安息日）是錯誤的教導。從他的教訓和行動中可清楚的顯示耶穌是一位虔誠的猶太人，他遵守梅瑟法律並且要求他的跟隨者必須準確地遵循法律。
二， 建立特殊獻身（納齊爾）團體
舊約時代有一群人被天主特別召叫為完成某種使命。戶籍紀稱這團體為「納齊爾」（Nazirite）(戶六2)。過納齊爾生活方式的人必須發願。此願要求三件事：戒飲清酒和烈酒，不可喝清酒和烈酒製的醋，不可喝任何葡萄汁，也不可吃新鮮或乾葡萄（戶六3）;不可剃頭，應讓頭髮自由生長（戶六5）;第三個要求是獻身者不可走進有屍體的地方，連父母親或兄弟姊妹死時，也不可讓自己沾染不潔。（戶六6-7）。
有些聖經學者基於第三個納齊爾願，主張耶穌所給的答案證明他要建立一個特殊獻身的團體。他們承認四部福音中沒有明顯的指出耶穌和他的弟子們積極的過納齊爾獻身生活方式：人們經常指控耶穌是「一個貪吃嗜酒的人」（瑪十一19），福音中對耶穌和弟子們頭髮的長度也不感興趣，耶穌自己對屍體不潔淨的規定似乎不表示關注。雖然如此，福音中明確地指出耶穌對他的跟隨者提出嚴厲的要求，例如離開自家的父母親和親人（路十四26、瑪十九29）、生活猶如流浪漢無家可歸（瑪八20）、甚至天天該背起十字架猶如被判死刑的囚犯（瑪十六24、路九23）。

三， 建立新的家庭
其他的學者（Stephen Barton, Fletcher-Louis）提出另一個看法：耶穌在瑪八22的答案意味著他要建立一個以順從天主旨意為基礎的新家庭。在這新的家庭中血緣關係不再重要，而且只有一位父親即是天上之父（瑪六9、二三9）。跟隨耶穌的人一定要服從這位天父。為何耶穌建立此新家庭？因為末世來臨的時期已緊迫，因此耶穌要求他的門徒放棄親屬關係及其家庭責任（包括埋葬已亡的父母親）而形成一個末世性的新家庭。
在猶太人和早期基督徒傳統中，罪人被認為靈性死亡的概念是常見的。浪子回頭的比喻是罪人回歸天父台前最好的例子。
這種二元化的解釋會引起基督徒和非基督徒、信者和不信者之間的對立和衝突，也肯定會促使基督宗教和其他宗教的對話惡化。恐怕過去教會歷史上所發生的優越感和霸氣會再次重演。
四， 耶穌時代的葬禮
上述三個論點都無法被接受。聖經學者依靠考古學家對巴勒斯坦古墓的發掘，再以早期耶穌時代中東殯葬儀式的傳統找到答案。按考古學家的發現，古代中東地區舉行兩段式的安葬禮。
當家人，尤其是父母親過世時，兒女開始哀悼期，前七天不可出門參加任何社群活動。亡者安葬後而且潔淨禮已經舉行完善，才回復社群生活之權利，但哀悼期尚未結束。屍體分解後，家屬將骨骼收集起來放入石罐裡（ossuary），整個的安葬禮才算完畢。因此，瑪八22的那位門徒應已經把過世的父親舉行了第一階段的安葬禮，而且已經舉行了潔淨禮才會出現於群體生活中。他要求耶穌讓他先完成第二階段安葬禮（撿骨）之後才回來跟隨耶穌，數時大約幾天到一年之間。
可見耶穌沒有反對梅瑟法律的要求而建立托拉之外的團體。耶穌也沒有建立一個封閉的修道團體。耶穌只挑戰拒絕多餘的儀式。已亡的親友已經妥善的安葬，已經與已亡的祖先在一起。多餘的規定可能會阻礙我們全心、全靈、全意跟隨主基督。

有些聖經學者基於第三個納齊爾願，主張耶穌所給的答案證明他要建立一個特殊獻身的團體。他們承認四部福音中沒有明顯的指出耶穌和他的弟子們積極的過納齊爾獻身生活方式：人們經常指控耶穌是「一個貪吃嗜酒的人」（瑪十一19），福音中對耶穌和弟子們頭髮的長度也不感興趣，耶穌自己對屍體不潔淨的規定似乎不表示關注。雖然如此，福音中明確地指出耶穌對他的跟隨者提出嚴厲的要求，例如離開自家的父母親和親人（路十四26、瑪十九29）、生活猶如流浪漢無家可歸（瑪八20）、甚至天天該背起十字架猶如被判死刑的囚犯（瑪十六24、路九23）。
傳統上，發納齊爾願的理由是為了得到天主的憐憫而俯允發願者的祈求。面臨患病或其他痛苦時，人發願而且放棄嗜酒也留長髮不剃頭。無法生育時婦女發此願，祈求天主賜予子女（撒上一11）。不過，瑪竇福音中該章節的上下文，卻無法找到任何理由為何那位門徒要發納齊爾願。他不求天主的特恩，只要處理父親後事才來跟隨耶穌。耶穌自己也不允許人以任何理由發誓（瑪五33-37）。「我對你們說：你們總不可發誓：不可指天，因為天是天主的寶座；不可指地，因為…」由此可見，這論點是無法被接受。
三， 建立新的家庭
其他的學者（Stephen Barton, Fletcher-Louis）提出另一個看法：耶穌在瑪八22的答案意味著他要建立一個以順從天主旨意為基礎的新家庭。在這新的家庭中血緣關係不再重要，而且只有一位父親即是天上之父（瑪六9、二三9）。跟隨耶穌的人一定要服從這位天父。為何耶穌建立此新家庭？因為末世來臨的時期已緊迫，因此耶穌要求他的門徒放棄親屬關係及其家庭責任（包括埋葬已亡的父母親）而形成一個末世性的新家庭。
在猶太人和早期基督徒傳統中，罪人被認為靈性死亡的概念是常見的。浪子回頭的比喻是罪人回歸天父台前最好的例子。
這種二元化的解釋會引起基督徒和非基督徒、信者和不信者之間的對立和衝突，也肯定會促使基督宗教和其他宗教的對話惡化。恐怕過去教會歷史上所發生的優越感和霸氣會再次重演。
四， 耶穌時代的葬禮
上述三個論點都無法被接受。聖經學者依靠考古學家對巴勒斯坦古墓的發掘，再以早期耶穌時代中東殯葬儀式的傳統找到答案。按考古學家的發現，古代中東地區舉行兩段式的安葬禮。
當家人，尤其是父母親過世時，兒女開始哀悼期，前七天不可出門參加任何社群活動。亡者安葬後而且潔淨禮已經舉行完善，才回復社群生活之權利，但哀悼期尚未結束。屍體分解後，家屬將骨骼收集起來放入石罐裡（ossuary），整個的安葬禮才算完畢。因此，瑪八22的那位門徒應已經把過世的父親舉行了第一階段的安葬禮，而且已經舉行了潔淨禮才會出現於群體生活中。他要求耶穌讓他先完成第二階段安葬禮（撿骨）之後才回來跟隨耶穌，數時大約幾天到一年之間。
可見耶穌沒有反對梅瑟法律的要求而建立托拉之外的團體。耶穌也沒有建立一個封閉的修道團體。耶穌只挑戰拒絕多餘的儀式。已亡的親友已經妥善的安葬，已經與已亡的祖先在一起。多餘的規定可能會阻礙我們全心、全靈、全意跟隨主基督。
