An LVAD is a mechanical pump that supports heart function and blood flow for people with advanced heart failure. It takes blood from the left ventricle and pumps it to the body and vital organs, assisting the heart which continues pumping and firing normally. The LVAD has an inflow cannula connected to the left ventricle and outflow cannula connected to the aorta, with an intracorporeal pump below the diaphragm that mechanically pumps blood at up to 15,000 rotations per minute to provide a blood flow of 8-10 liters per minute.
