LEFT VENTRICULAR ASSIST
DEVICE
Indroduction
• A left ventricular assist device (LVAD) is a
mechanical pump that is used to support the
heart function and blood flow in people with
advanced heart failure and very week heart.
How does it work
• The device take blood from left ventricle and
help pump in to the body and vital organ just
as a health heart would.
Does it replace the heart
• No – the heart is still pumping and firing like
normal , but the pump is there to assist so the
body’s’ organs and muscles can function
properly
LVAD Function
• Inflow cannula connected to LV
apex
• Outflow cannula connected to
arota
• Intracorporeal pump with
continuous axial flow rest below
diaphragm
• Device mechanically pump blood
• Up to 15000 rotations / min=8-10
L/ min blood flow
