NAME/S: Web Khewsubtrakool DATE: Tuesday March, 2nd 2010 CLASS: Science 7Ku Period: (AB)
TITLE: Measuring the Lung Capacity
PURPOSE: To find out the amount of air we can carry in our lungs.
PROCEDURE:
Find a bottle that is larger than 1.5 liters, but the lid of the bottle have to be more than 2cm in diameter. Also find straws that can bend and that have a diameter of around 0.5cm in diameter to use with the bottle.
Then make two holes that pass through the lid. Make sure that the holes are big enough so that the straws are able to pass through it.
After the holes are done, place the short half of the straws into the bottle. Make sure that the bendy part of the straws does not enter the bottle.
Then seal both sides of the straws with a glue gun.
Fill the bottle nearly to the brim with water.
After that, close the lid with the straws intact.
Then turn the whole bottle upside down with the heads of the straw facing upwards. Wait until the water stops draining from the straws.
When the water stops, blow into one of the straws and measure the amount of water coming out of the other straw.
Then when the person can’t blow any more wait until the water stop dripping from the straw opposite the subject that is blowing. Then you may be able to see how much water in total had come out of the bottle.
Repeat step 9 twice and average the values. You may also have a child try to do it as well as an adult. So you may be able to compare the averages.
DATA:
Try 1 (ml)Try 2 (ml) Average (ml)Child’s Lung Capacity600(ml)530(ml)565(ml)Adult’s Lung Capacity930(ml)1020(ml)975(ml)
RESULTS / QUESTIONS:
Is there a correlation between lung capacity and athletic skills and interest? Would you expect to find such a correlation? Why or why not?
Ans: I think that there is a correlation between lung capacities and athletics. For example, people who have a lot of lung capacity may help them in different types of sports, such as swimming. In swimming, the fastest way to swim is to breathe less, because while swimming in fast speeds breathing may actually slow you down. Furthermore, if you have less than normal lung capacity you would be breathing more quickly than normal, when doing excessive exercises, to supply your body with oxygen.
CONCLUSION:
In our lab have I found out an approximate value of a child’s and adult’s lung capacities. The adult average lung capacity was 975ml , compared to the child’s which is 565ml. Overall we also relies that when we are doing the test, if we did get all the air out of our lungs there would be a dangerous factor. In which we might ran out of breath and collapse, but luckily in our lab we only did two tests so that it will not tire the lungs of the subjects.
