  • 8. • The independent sector continues to provide approximately 45% of Oxbridge places despite considerable expenditure by these universities on fair access programmes. ! ! • Nationally, 7% of students attend independent schools, rising to 13% for A-level students. ! • Record numbers of university places were awarded to applicants from state schools following a Government drive to create a more socially balanced student body. (The Telegraph March 2014)! The Challenge for State Schools!

The Challenge for State Schools! 1.  At  universi-es  with  the  highest  entry  requirements  the  most  advantaged  20  per   cent  of  young  people  were  6.3  -mes  more  likely  to  enter  one  of  these  universi-es   than  the  most  disadvantaged  40  per  cent.  [Trends  in  young  par-cipa-on  by   student  background  and  selec-vity  of  ins-tu-on,  OFFA  2014]   2.  Entrants  to  Russell  Group  universi-es  from  state  schools  decreased  from  75.6%  in   2002/03  to  74.6%  in  2011/12.  Entrants  to  Russell  Group  universi-es  from  less   advantaged  backgrounds  decreased  from  19.9%  in  2002/03  to  19.0%  in  2011/12.   [The  Social  Mobility  and  Child  Poverty  Commission,  2013]   3.  There  are  an  es-mated  3,700  missing  state  educated  students  who  have  the   grades  to  get  into  Russell  Group  universi-es  in  England  but  do  not  get  the  places.   [as  above]   4.  16%  of  pupils  who  are  eligible  for  Free  School  Meals  progress  to  university,  in   comparison  to  96%  of  those  educated  in  independent  schools.  Private  school   students  are  22  more  likely  to  go  to  a  leading  university.  [SuSon  Trust,  2012]
