Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, also known as MRSA, is the bacterial strain responsible for causing staph infections. There are approximately one million infections every year because of these bacteria. MRSA is also responsible for 20% of all hospital infections. The main mechanism for the transfer of these bacteria is through direct skin-skin contact. The contraction of this disease is not only painful and potentially life threatening, but it can lead to an extra five days in the hospital and an additional average of $6,400 in hospital fees. This is outrageous, especially considering the fact that the cause of the infection is usually due to improper hygienic practices by the hospital staff. There is an easy solution to preventing the spread of MRSA and most other diseases spread through skin-skin contact - washing your hands. Unfortunately it is nearly impossible to ensure that hospital employees are practicing proper hygiene, until now. Comment by Michele: Cite. Comment by Michele: Cite. Healthy Hands is an innovative new way to help ease the on-going difficulty employers face, whilst trying to ensure their employees maintain a clean and safe environment. The best part is that hospitals are not the only businesses that can benefit from Healthy Hands. Restaurants, schools, and even households can all benefit from this service. The concept is simple. It is a wireless system set up within a series of soap and/ or hand sanitizer dispensers that keeps track of how often employees wash their hands. Using an innovative new identification wrist band, the Healthy Hands dispensers will wirelessly transmit the ID information provided by the wrist band to a wireless service. This service will keep track of the amount of times each employee washes, or sanitizes their hands in real time! This will provide a means by which employers can incentivize and monitor the hygiene of their employees. Comment by Michele: Don’t use exclamation points in business pa ...

At its core, generative artificial intelligence relies on the concept of generative models, which serve as engines that churn out entirely new data resembling their training data. It is like a sculptor who has studied so many forms found in nature and then uses this knowledge to create sculptures from his imagination that have never been seen before anywhere else. If taken to cyberspace, gans work almost the same way.

Why LTC Facilities Should Improve Incontinence Care Management - Eric Cohen, SCA Americas
1. Interview with: Eric Cohen, Key
Account Manager for Distribution,
SCA Americas
SCA, the maker of TENA® incontinence
and skin care products, attended the
marcus evans LTC & Senior Living
CXO Summit Fall 2015 from July
13-14 in Palm Beach, Florida, and spoke
about incontinence care and the role of
long-term care facilities in providing
individualized care and promoting the
well-being of residents.
“The concept of individualized care, or
making sure the right incontinence
product is on the right person at the
right time is key,” according to Eric
Cohen, Key Account Manager for
Distribution, at SCA. “Every leakage has
a ripple effect, so preventing leaks not
only means the wearer is comfortable
and dry, but also means fewer linen
changes minimizing laundry costs.
Most importantly, there is less risk of
resident discomfort and incontinence-
related skin conditions like dermatitis or
skin ulcers – outcomes that poorly
affect resident dignity and often cost
more to treat than incontinence itself,”
Cohen explains.
How could long-term care and
nursing facilities better manage
incontinence care? What troubles
them the most?
Providing proper incontinence care can
be challenging, time consuming and
expensive. Ensuring that residents have
the right product at the right time –
based on their individual needs and
toileting patterns – is not easy, but tools
and staff training can simplify these
tasks. Long-term care facilities should
consider investing in technology or
creating processes to carefully track
individual toileting patterns and product
changes, ensuring a more individualized
approach to continence care, better
inventory management and product
ordering. This will also hold staff
accountable for individual resident
assessments, allowing them to better
manage time and resources, minimize
resident leaks, and spend more time
with other residents.
Would the use of a larger or more
absorbent product be part of the
solution?
It is about more than a single product –
it is about the right product for each
individual. While some residents are
bedridden, others are fully mobile,
which means they have vastly different
incontinence and skin care needs.
Incontinence products do more than
just prevent leakage – they absorb fluid,
keeping skin dry and the wearer
comfortable. The size and absorbency of
the brief varies based on each resident
and his or her specific needs. SCA helps
facilities understand that bigger is not
always better, helping them establish an
appropriate toileting routine for each
resident.
How could facilities better assess
what residents need?
There are many products and tools that
can help facilities better assess
residents’ needs. For example, TENA
Identifi is a sensor-wear product that
tracks resident voiding patterns over a
72-hour assessment period.
The technology helps facility managers
determine the best product and toileting
routine for each individual through in-
depth data analysis.
For example, if Mrs. Smith voids at 9am
every day, but the facility has been
toileting her at 9.30am, moving this
forward by half an hour would improve
her comfort, quality of life and
independence. That is what effective
continence care is all about.
The goal should be driving residents
from an incontinence status to one of
continence; and, while it may be
challenging to provide individualized
care, avoidable costs related to incorrect
product selection, laundry, staff time
and incontinence inventory spend will be
minimized long-term.
Could you tell us more about the
ripple effect on costs that you
referred to earlier?
The “wrong” product can mean many
things. Whether the absorbency level is
inadequate or the size and fit is too
large, use of an incorrect product often
leads to more leaks, changes and skin
issues.
In fact, it is often more expensive to
treat incontinence-associated dermatitis
or skin ulcers than it is to invest in the
right products.
To decide what products to use, staff
must first better understand residents’
incontinence needs.
How could facilities prepare for
upcoming regulations?
The FDA is moving toward unique
device identification and although
incontinence care is not mandated right
now, it likely will be in the future.
In fact, to stay ahead of this trend, SCA
recently launched a brief that features a
barcode on each product, allowing
facilities to scan the case for inventory
control. For example, if Mrs. Jones
previously needed four products daily,
but she starts using eight products, the
facility inventory managers should
investigate that increase, and determine
if her condition changed, demanding a
more permanent inventory update.
Inventory management is a demanding
task that should be efficient. Innovative
technology that takes products to the
next level can simplify this task for
facilities.
