The regulation was written to minimize exposure to lead and prevent lead poisoning in children. Lead dust from construction activities can cause lead poisoning in children and remain in homes after projects, exposing families. The regulation requires that renovations impacting lead-based paint in pre-1978 housing occupied by children or pregnant women must be supervised by an individual certified through an 8-hour Lead Renovator, Repair and Painting course. The course covers regulations, lead testing, work practices, cleaning and record keeping required to complete renovations safely.
