The poem tells the story of Lord Ullin's daughter who falls in love with a chief from another clan. When their love is not approved by Lord Ullin, the couple attempts to elope by hiring a boat to take them across a stormy sea. They are pursued for two days by Lord Ullin and his men. As the boat crosses the sea in a raging storm, Lord Ullin watches helplessly from the shore as his daughter and her lover drown, with his heart melting too late to forgive and save them.
