Hazel Bishop was born in 1906 in New Jersey. She studied at Barnard College and Columbia University, working as an organic chemist during World War II developing fuels for airplanes. In the 1940s and 1950s she worked for various cosmetic companies and conducted experiments staining and dyeing her own skin. In 1949 she developed her own long-lasting lipstick that would not rub off or smudge, launching her company Hazel Bishop Inc. in 1950. Her "Lasting Lipstick" became very successful, earning $10 million annually by 1953. She later expanded into other personal care products. Hazel Bishop revolutionized the lipstick industry by creating the first effective long-lasting formula that did not transfer or smear
