Dialogue Meeting Objectives
A. Identify five displaced local seed varieties valued by
farmers
B. Restore these seeds through farmer participation
C. Promote seed diversity and traditional knowledge
Why Restore Local Seed Varieties?
• Preserve traditional agricultural biodiversity
• Improve crop adaptability and resilience
• Support cultural heritage and local food systems
What Are Displaced Seeds?
• Locally adapted seeds that were once commonly
cultivated
• Lost due to market pressures, climate change, or
lack of access
• Still valued for taste, resilience, or cultural
importance
Step 1: Identifying Displaced Seeds
• Conduct dialogue meetings with selected farmers
and elders
• Discuss past farming practices and lost seed
varieties
• Understand reasons for displacement and farmer
preferences
Step 2: Dialogue Meetings
• Include elders and experienced farmers
• Use storytelling and collective memory tools
• Document seed names, traits, and uses
Step 3: Seed Access and Collection
• Identify where the seeds can still be found (e.g.,
neighboring communities)
• Visit and collect viable seed samples
• Ensure quality and authenticity
Step 4: Seed Restoration and Reproduction
• Distribute seeds to 210 smallholder farmers in
seven kebeles
• Promote multiplication using agroecological
practices
• Monitor seed health and productivity
Farmer Roles in Seed Restoration
• Participate in identification and decision-making
• Take care of seed multiplication
• Document experiences and outcomes
Expected Outputs
• Atleast three to five local seed varieties restored
• Strengthened farmer seed systems
• Improved food security and crop resilience
Next Steps and Support
• Follow-up on seed planting and management
• Provide technical support and local seed fairs
• Encourage farmer-to-farmer sharing
