2. The impact of the recession
When the 2008
recession hit
Glasgow many shops
and businesses were
hit hard. Even busier
shopping areas like
Buchanan Street
suffered.
3. Desperate measures
Retailers were forced
to slash prices to
boost revenue. But
even the lure of sales
was not enough to
get many people
through their doors.
4. ‘Safer’ shops also affected
Larger retailers
seemed to remain
stable although
were not immune to
the recession’s
impact – House of
Fraser announced
job cuts in 2009 .
5. Fresh Hope
2012 brought new hope to
many, with the National
Office of Statistics
announcing a very sharp
monthly increase (0.9%) in
spending in January.
This also came after a very
encouraging December
2011 – where sales in shops
like Office were 4% higher
than the previous year!
6. New business opportunities in Glasgow
After several difficult
years, where many
businesses have had
to shut up shop –
these new retail
figures give strong
hope to those who are
planning to open new
shops and outlets in
today’s testing climate
