An engineer named Yiannis Hatzopoulos has created an "Islamic SIM card" that provides religious features for Muslims. The SIM card can determine the direction of Mecca and provide reminders for the five daily prayers. It also automatically mutes the phone during prayer times. This SIM card works in both smartphones and basic mobile phones, allowing Muslims to access religious functions on any phone. Hatzopoulos was inspired by Islamic features on phones at a 2009 tech conference and wants to make those features more widely available through a SIM card. He is currently working on adding features for Ramadan reminders and integration with Facebook.
