2. - What is Liturgy?
1. The term liturgy came from the Greek word
“LEITOURGIA”.
- - Laos or Leitos = pertains to people or
belonging to people.
- - Urgy or Ergon (energy) = pertains to work,
activity or service.
- - “LITURGY” – therefore refers to the
“Work of the People”
3. ⚫Pero naa pay mas lalom ani nga
pagpasabot kay it is not simply the
people’s work.
2. Liturgy is the work of Christ on
behalf of the People. He is the one
doing the work of the people because
they are not able to accomplish
salvation on their own.
3. It is the Work of God in which the
people participates.
4. ⚫There are two-fold Character of Liturgy:
1. Sanctification of Man/Woman (God’s
work). Ang Dios nagpakatawo aron pag-
uban og pagluwas kanato.
2. Glorification of God (People’s work). Ang
tubag sa mga tawo sa pag-anhi sa Dios
pinaagi sa pagdayeg og pagbuhat sa
iyang kabubut-on.
6. ⚫Essential Characteristics of
Liturgy:
⚫1. Trinitarian – God’s salvific
action. The Father whom Christ
the Son has come to reveal, the
Spirit whom Christ promises and
sends so that his very presence
is effected.
7. ⚫2. Paschal – refers to the passion,
death and resurrection of Christ.
⚫3. Ecclesial – emphasizes the
communitarian aspect of God’s
loving plan of salvation.
⚫4. Biblical – Word of God occupies an
eminent place in the liturgy as an
essential component of liturgical
acts.
8. ⚫5. Cyclical – it is based on liturgical cycles
(daily, weekly, year). Liturgical Calendar.
⚫6. Personal – it is personally lived
according to one’s giftedness.
⚫7. Missionary/ Communitarian – In
liturgy, prayer is offered for the world in
its intercession. Liturgical celebrations
become diakonia – a service towards
people in charity, dialogue and peace.
9. ⚫Liturgy includes:
⚫1. The Holy Mass or the Eucharistic
Worship
⚫2. The Seven Sacraments
⚫3. The Sacramentals (Liturgical Colors,
Symbols, Vessels, Vestments, Linens and
Books).
⚫4. The Liturgy of the Hours (Lauds,
Vespers, Office of Readings).
⚫5. The Liturgical Year and Seasons

12. ⚫The Holy Mass/Eucharistic
Celebration is the center of
the Liturgy
⚫-LG no. 11, “The Eucharist,
the climax of Christian
initiation, is the center, the
source and summit of the
whole of Christian life.
13. ⚫Why? For it commemorates the
Paschal Mystery of Christ.
⚫The term Eucharist is derived
from the Greek word Eucharistia
which means “thanksgiving”.
⚫Jesus Himself “gave thanks” at
the Last Supper (Luke 22: 19; 1
Cor 11:24; Mk 14:23; Mt 26:27
14. ⚫THE HOLY EUCHARIST IS NOT
⚫1. Priest – Centered Activity (Gimiks of
Priest)
⚫2. Choir – Centered Activity (Beautiful
Music and ceremonies)
⚫3. Decoration-Centered Activity (Full
colorful decorations and designs)
⚫- It is CHRIST-CENTERED ACTIVITY!!!
15. ⚫Important points about the Liturgy
of the Holy Eucharist:
⚫* PCP II stresses on FULL,
CONSCIOUS and ACTIVE
participation during the celebration.
⚫The Mass, or the Holy Eucharist is
both a personal and an ecclesial or
communal worship activity.
Therefore, everybody must
participate.
17. ⚫5 Common Mistakes Made by
Catholics during Mass:
⚫1.) Sitting before the Priest sits
⚫ - In the Mass, the celebrating
priest is the representative of
Christ and it is inappropriate for
the people to sit before he
does.
18. ⚫2.) Making the Sign of the Cross
repeatedly in the Mass. (Uban
manguros human sa
pagkalawat)
⚫-This is the mistake that many
Catholics make oftentimes. The
sign of the cross is made at only
two parts of the Mass… the
beginning and at the end.
19. ⚫3) Genuflecting with the Left Knee
⚫- During the passion of Christ, the
Roman soldiers knelt with their left
knee to Jesus, but they were
actually mocking him.
⚫-Catholics genuflect, that is kneel
with the right knee, as a sign of
respect to the Holy Eucharist.
20. ⚫4. Meeting the Priest for Blessing
immediately after the Mass
⚫- The priest has already pronounced
words of blessings in the Mass at the
Concluding Rite just before the end of the
Mass. So there is no need meeting him for
personal blessings after he has recessed
out of the Church.
21. ⚫5) Leaving the Church Before the Priest
⚫- It is appropriate for you to wait for the
priest to completely recess out of the
Church before you can follow suit.
22. ⚫How to participate well in the Mass?
⚫1. Read the corresponding readings
ahead of time
⚫2. Pray before the Mass
⚫3. Prepare your mind and heart
before the mass. During the Mass,
put your mind and heart to the
celebration.
⚫4. Serve with pure intention and
loving service.
23. ⚫Greek Mythology: The best way to imitate
god is to imitate god. So if your God is
Dionisius, the best way to worship God is
to have a drink. If your God is Poseidon,
the best way to worship God is to go
fishing.
⚫But if your God is the God of salvation,
the God of Mercy and forgiveness, then in
the liturgy, we imitate Him and worship
Him as what God wants to be worshipped.
24. ⚫As a summary:
⚫1. Liturgy is the work of the people. It
means that the people have got to be
engaged to Him.
⚫2. Liturgy is done in behalf of the people
by Christ because He is the One who can
say a Perfect Prayer to the Father.
⚫3. Liturgy is the work of the people
imitating the Work of God.
