Yumeno Kyūsaku
In the Hakata area in Kyūshū, yumeno kyūsaku refers to a aimless
dreamer in the local dialect, a term that Sugiyama Taidō adopted as his
pen name when his Nationalist father Shigemaru used that to deride his
writing.1 He was born in Fukuoka prefecture in Kyūshū and attended Keiō
University for two years (1911–13), after which he worked as a farmer,
a monk, and a reporter for the Kyūshū Nippō newspaper. In 1926, he
debuted as a writer with the submission “Ayakashi no tsuzumi” (1926, The
Eerie Hand Drum) to the magazine Shin seinen (New Youth), a story that
won the second prize in the fiction competition.
Yumeno Kyūsaku is known for his science fiction, mystery, and fan-
tasy. His representative work is Dogura magura (1935), a magnum opus
that took him ten years to write and features an amnesiac experiencing “a
sort of hell inside the brain” (nōzui no jigoku)2 in a mental hospital where
he becomes implicated in a series of past crimes that may or may not
have anything to do with him. The first-person sustained soliloquy and
the use of the epistolary form are trademarks of Yumeno’s style, both of
which he uses with sophistication in “Hell in a Bottle.” In addition to that,
Yumeno is fascinated with enclosed and contained space: a solitary cell in
an insane asylum, a desert island, a letter inscribed with abject desire and
“Binzume no jigoku,” by Yumeno Kyūsaku (1889–1936), 1928. Translated by Angela
Yiu. This translation is based on Yumeno Kyūsaku, Binzume no jigoku, in Binzume
no jigoku (Kawakado bunko, [1975], 2009), 5–20. This story is also collected in
Yumeno Kyūsaku zenshū, edited by Nakajima Kōtarō and Tanigawa Ken’ichi (San’ichi
shobō, 1969–70), vol. 1, 108–14.

suffering tucked in a bottle like a genie or a fetus in a womb.3 His stories
feature a space sealed off from the rest of the world physically and tem-
porally, a world governed by its own rules in every aspect and challenges
conventional understanding of normality. “Hell in a Bottle” portrays the
eerie perfection of that world when the internal rules work, in contrast to
the grotesque and unsalvageable breakdown of that world when it comes
in contact with external reality. The beauty and abundance of the tropical
desert island where the shipwrecked brother and sister mature physically
to commit incest is both Eden and Hell, utopia and dyst.

skryfwerk wat Suid-Afrikaanse skrywers kan bied.

a dog a lovely girl and a horse
and then you got everything
through years of hard work too, yes,
but above all inspiration and promise
the lovely girl became a woman
and children filled your house
neither of you always understood each other
but insight really comes with the years
and then, on the day of your death, you were alone

or did there perhaps for one merciful moment

mornings he wakes with Neoboule’s name on his lips
and evenings the seagulls on the beach call, tormenting him

Hy’t opgestaan, die Geel Boek toegeslaan,
en effe onvas, met oë verskrik, bloedbeloop,
is hy gehelp tot in die vangwa buite,
het nog teen die palms geskuur toe hy trap-af loop.
