LITERACY

 Salvation Army is a Christian denomination and
international charitable organisation organised in a quasi-military
structure. The organisation reports worldwide membership of over 1.5
million
 Objective is the advancement of the Christian religion of education,
the relief of poverty, and other charitable objects beneficial to society or
the community of mankind as a whole.

LITERACY
Goals are to:
1) Significantly increase the percentage of children able to read at grade
level
2) Help children discover the joy of reading God’s Word
3) break the cycle of illiteracy
4) Establish a relationship between a caring tutor and a child
5) Have children see reading and a biblical lifestyle as vital skills for
success in life
BRIEF HISTORY
 January 2006, The American Bible Society conducted a pilot of Mission:
Literacy with three Salvation Army New Jersey Divisions and other strategic
partners. Producing remarkable results, the ABS allowed the Salvation Army
Divisions to continue in October 2006.
 July 2008, the ABS funded a second revision and reprinting of lessons and
trainings implemented by the Salvation Army. In spring 2010, a third revision
was yet again funded due to the fast spread of the mission.
BRIEF HISTORY
 Fall of 2011, the ABS endorsed the expansion of lesson plans to
include many other activities which was planned by Margaret
Petrowske, an educator from Central Territory.
 As of today, the Mission : Literacy is still growing and providing
many people across USA with education in the form of activities and
is still spreading the literacy.
IMPACT
 The students taught by the Salvation Army have provided good feedback
towards the Salvation Army’s lessons in literacy, and still is spreading
Christianity and literacy widely across the USA
 It has even inspired a Annie Cummins who launched a drive to collect
books at her neighbourhood such that she could donate these books to others.
She has since collected over 9400 books.
