Linux was created in 1991 by Finnish computer programmer Linus Torvalds and has since been developed collaboratively and freely by programmers worldwide. It is an open-source operating system assembled under a development model that allows for modifications and redistribution. The penguin mascot Tux represents Linux, deriving from when Torvalds was bitten by a penguin during a vacation in the Southern Hemisphere.
