The poet found great pleasure in humanity as one of nature's fairest creations, but was grieved by what humanity has made itself into. While occupied only with earning and spending, people shut themselves off from the true pleasures of the universe, choosing fleeting man-made pleasures that instead bring misery and sorrow in return.
