Lincoln’s Leadership
President Lincoln said that if we execute young boy soldiers for desertion, then we should punish the those who encourage them to desert. Lincoln was a leader who believed in the fair treatment of all. Like Lincoln, an effective instructional leader must treat all staff members equally and with respect .
Lincoln was faced with listening to complaining cabinet members. Lincoln remained calm listening to each cabinet members concerns and ideas. Like Lincoln, instructional leaders must allow staff members to express their concerns and share their ideas.
While attempting to calm his cabinet members Lincoln was also dealing with quarreling generals. Despite their behavior Lincoln still respected his generals, especially General Grant and General Meade. Even though he respected Grant Lincoln corrected Grant when he got out of line.
Instructional leaders must also be willing to provide constructive criticism when necessary, even if the individual is highly respected staff member.
