This presentation is derived from a short research paper accepted to the i3 conference, which is being held at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen between 23rd and 26th June 2015. Conference themes include information and its societal impact. The research was carried out in June 2014, and sought to determine the impact of those grassroots campaign groups which are fighting to save substantial portions of their library provision from closure. These groups have proliferated across the UK, and are engaged in an ongoing struggle with their respective local authority decision makers.

During this presentation we look at various aspects of crowdsourced OCR text correction, commenting, and tagging for digitized historical newspapers at the National Library of Australia’s Trove, the California Digital Newspaper Collection (CDNC), and at the Cambridge Public Library in Cambridge Massachusetts as well as the astounding number of historical birth, death, marriage, census, and other records transcribed by “crowd” volunteers at Family Search. Some aspects include: demographics, experiences, motivation, quality, preferred data, economics and marketing. You will see that crowd sourcing is not only feasible but also practical and desirable. You will wonder why your own cultural heritage organization hasn't begun its own crowdsourcing project!

The library identity has been closely bound with its collection. However this is changing as research and learning behaviours evolve in a network environment. There are three interesting trends. First, atttention is shifting from a library-centric view of a locally owned collection to a user-centred view of a facilitated collection in places where the library can add value. Second, there is growing emphasis on support for creation, for the process of research, as well as for the products, the article or book. And third, we are seeing a changing perspective on the historic core, the print book collection. Increasingly, this is being seen in collective ways as institutions manage down print, or think about its management in cooperative settings, or retire collections as space is reconfigured around research and learning experiences. This presentation also provides preliminary findings for the analysis being carried out by OCLC Research of the RLUK collective collection.
On April 27, 2011, VTDNP members Chris Kirby and Tom McMurdo joined the Boston Public Library's (BPL) Chrissy Watkins Rissmeyer for a joint presentation on the NDNP and the VTDNP at the Massachusetts Library Association conference. This talk was part of the BPL's efforts to inform interested parties and the public at large about their efforts to join the NDNP as a new state program.

'And Other Duties as Assigned' Expanding the Boundaries of the E-resource Lif...NASIG
Librarians working in environments with a small number of people reporting to them and a limited number of professional staff members often have a great number of disparate duties. How do the tasks and jobs suggested in the e-resource life cycle relate to the many duties of a librarian in a small organization? The presenters will discuss how they break down their responsibilities using the framework of the e-resource life cycle as well as other job analysis techniques to tackle both large and small projects. Among our examples will be an inventory of our collections to clean up our catalogs and our OCLC listings, preparing items for digitization, and implementation of a discovery system. We also want to explore how the needs of a law library and the needs of a general academic library impact workflow and decisions.

This is a presentation relating to my doctoral study , which was sponsored by the ESRC and Skills Development Scotland. It is a reflective piece, covering highlights from the PhD process (academic and practical contributions), a sample of research findings, and what I am doing now that I have graduated. My PhD work related to the networking behaviours & social media use of young job seekers living in Scotland, from an informational perspective.
This is a presentation of interview findings which forms part of my PhD project, about how young people engage with their networks and use social media during job search to acquire information. The study was informed by Tom Wilson's model of information seeking (1981), and also included the use of the "name generator" approach to gather ego-net data. This facilitated the creation of ego-net visuals (or job search information networks), which were then analysed to understand the behaviours associated with networking during job search from a young persons perspective. It also provided evidence of how information acquired from people and organisations, both offline and via social media, can improve the quality of job search via access to higher levels of social capital.
This is an academic poster that I will be presenting at the Information Seeking in Context conference 2016, hosted by the University of Zadar, Croatia.
It is called "The role of networking and social media during job search: an information behaviour perspective", and is based upon my PhD work to date. I am now entering my final year.
A critical review of the literature pertaining to the networking behaviours of young jobseekers, in both offline and online environments. A model from information behaviour theory is proposed as a suitable theoretical framework for future research in this area.
