6. God’s Putting The Brakes On Sin
• Exodus was God getting the people out of
Egypt
• The first half of Leviticus was God setting the
standards for the people to “come before”
Him, and to tabernacle with Him.
• The second half of Leviticus is God getting
Egypt out of the people.
7. Outline
• Lev 26:1 Israel’s Blessings for Obedience
• Lev 26:14 Punishment for Disobedience
• Lev 27:1 Laws About Vows and things
dedicated to the LORD
8. Let’s Read Lev 26:1-13
• Lev 26:1 Israel’s Blessings for Obedience
• Lev 26:14 Punishment for Disobedience
• Lev 27:1 Laws About Vows and things dedicated to the LORD
9. Leviticus 26:3, If/Then
• NAU Leviticus 26:3 'If you walk in My statutes and
keep My commandments so as to carry them out,
4 then I shall give you rains in their season…
• NAU Leviticus 26:14 'But if you do not obey Me…
16 I, in turn, will do this to you…
• Possession of, and blessing in the land is
conditional, and a bilateral covenant.
• Ownership of the land is unconditional, and a
unilateral covenant, dependant only upon God’s
faithfulness.
10. Leviticus 26:3, Blessings & Curses
• Leviticus 26 is kind of a shorter version of Deut 28
• NAU Deuteronomy 28:1 "Now it shall be, if you
diligently obey the LORD your God, being careful
to do all His commandments which I command
you today, the LORD your God will set you high
above all the nations of the earth. 2 "All these
blessings will come upon you…
• Deuteronomy 28:15 "But it shall come about, if
you do not obey the LORD your God, to observe
to do all His commandments and His statutes
with which I charge you today, that all these
curses will come upon you and overtake you:
11. Leviticus 26:5, You Shall Eat Your Bread
• NKJ Leviticus 26:5 Your threshing shall last till the time of
vintage, and the vintage shall last till the time of sowing;
you shall eat your bread to the full, and dwell in your land
safely.
• Shabbat Inspiration says, “This verse not only describes
physical bread, but the Torah which is allegorically likened
to bread. It is often difficult for people to discern that there
is more to survival than material comforts. In the Land of
Israel, Moses told them, they would see the hand of God in
every kernel of grain, and not languish in spiritual
deprivation…”
• DLK says, “No it does not, there is nothing allegorical about
this verse at all. God is simply promising that “if” they keep
His commands, He will bless them. A bilateral covenant.”
12. • Jerusalem Daily Photo Today's photo by
Yehoshua Halevi shows a Jerusalem bakery's
specialty: fresh challah bread for the Sabbath.
13. Leviticus 26:7, Enemies
• NAU Leviticus 26:7 'But you will chase your
enemies and they will fall before you by the
sword;
• I could not find any other chapter in the whole
NAU Bible that used “enemies” as much as
Leviticus 26, not even close. It’s used here 10 X’s!
• 1st 2 uses are if they obey they will prevail. The
next 8 uses are about punishment for
disobedience.
14. Leviticus 26:17,
Struck Down Before Your Enemies
• Joshua 7:2- 8:28, tells the account of how the city of Ai
defeated Israel and the “men of Ai struck down about
thirty-six of their men.”
• Joshua is leading millions, and only 36 died!
• NAU Joshua 7:6 “Then Joshua tore his clothes and fell to the
earth on his face before the ark of the LORD until the
evening, both he and the elders of Israel; and they put dust
on their heads.” I think they understood the implications of
Leviticus 26:17 “I will set My face against you so that you
will be struck down before your enemies…”
• Joshua 7:10 So the LORD said to Joshua…11 "Israel has
sinned, and they have also transgressed My covenant
which I commanded them…
• Joshua exposed Achan’s sin, judged it and then burned Ai.
15. Solomon Knew The Promises About
Enemies
• Solomon had a literal hermeneutic and prayed;
• NAU 1 Kings 8:33 "When Your people Israel are
defeated before an enemy, because they have
sinned against You, if they turn to You again and
confess Your name and pray and make
supplication to You in this house, 34 then hear in
heaven, and forgive the sin of Your people Israel,
and bring them back to the land which You gave
to their fathers.
16. Leviticus 26:6, 22, Wild Animals
• NAU Leviticus 26:6…I shall also eliminate harmful beasts
from the land, and no sword will pass through your land.
• God never says that humans and wild animals are brothers.
• NAU Genesis 9:2 "The fear of you and the terror of you will
be on every beast of the earth and on every bird of the sky;
with everything that creeps on the ground, and all the fish
of the sea, into your hand they are given.
• When Jesus reigns during the millennial Kingdom “the wolf
will dwell with the lamb” Isaiah 11:6, but not before.
• But Israel’s disobedience would be punished. Leviticus
26:22 'I will let loose among you the beasts of the field,
which will bereave you of your children and destroy your
cattle and reduce your number so that your roads lie
deserted.
17. Leviticus 26:9, Be Fruitful And Multiply
• NAU Leviticus
26:9 'So I will
turn toward
you and make
you fruitful
and multiply
you, and I will
confirm My
covenant with
you.
18. Let’s Read Lev 26:14-33
• Lev 26:1 Israel’s Blessings for Obedience
• Lev 26:14 Punishment for Disobedience
• Lev 27:1 Laws About Vows and things dedicated to the LORD
19. Leviticus 26:14-39, Lord Has Sworn
The LORD will keep His promises (Leviticus 26:14-39).
• NAU Judges 2:15 Wherever they went, the hand of the
LORD was against them for evil, as the LORD had
spoken and as the LORD had sworn to them, so that
they were severely distressed.
• Amos 8:7 The LORD has sworn by the pride of Jacob,
"Indeed, I will never forget any of their deeds. 8
"Because of this will not the land quake And everyone
who dwells in it mourn?
• NAU Hebrews 7:21 …"THE LORD HAS SWORN AND WILL
NOT CHANGE HIS MIND…
20. Leviticus 26:21,
Unwilling To Come To Me
• NAU Leviticus 26:21 'If then, you act with hostility against
Me and are unwilling to obey Me, I will increase the plague
on you seven times according to your sins.
• John 5:40 and you are unwilling to come to Me…
• Matthew 23:37 …How often I wanted to gather your
children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks under
her wings, and you were unwilling.
• Oswald Chambers said, “God does not have to come and
tell me what I must do for Him, He brings me into a
relationship with Himself where I hear His call and
understand what He wants me to do, and I do it out of
sheer love to Him… When people say they have had a call
to foreign service, or to any particular sphere of work, they
mean that their relationship to God has enabled them to
realize what they can do for God.”
21. Let’s Read Lev 26:34-46
• Lev 26:1 Israel’s Blessings for Obedience
• Lev 26:14 Punishment for Disobedience
• Lev 27:1 Laws About Vows and things dedicated to the LORD
22. Leviticus 26:42, I Will Remember My
Covenants & The Land
• NAU Leviticus 26:42 then I will remember My
covenant with Jacob, and I will remember also
My covenant with Isaac, and My covenant
with Abraham as well, and I will remember
the land.
• God is talking about remembering His
unconditional, unilateral covenants, and His
universal covenants.
23. Gen 12:1-3, Unilateral Covenant
• God did not say in;
• Gen 12:2 “[If you do] I will make you into a
great nation and I will bless you;”
• God simply gave a command and then 4
promises
• This is a unilateral (one sided) covenant
because God didn’t condition the promises
upon anything.
24. Gen 9:10-11,
Universal, Unilateral Covenant
• NAU Genesis 9:9-11…11 "I establish My covenant with you;
and all flesh shall never again be cut off by the water of the
flood, neither shall there again be a flood to destroy the
earth."
• This is a universal, unilateral covenant with every “creature
on earth”
• What is required of the living creatures to keep their end of
the bargain?
• Who’s faithfulness does this depend upon?
• The very nature and character of God are at stake here.
• Everything hangs in the balance. If God is not faithful to
absolutely keep His promises what hope do we have? We
should cringe and cower at the sight of every rain cloud, or
local flood.
25. Lev. 26:33, Diaspora & Regathering
• NAU Leviticus 26:33 'You, however, I will scatter among
the nations and will draw out a sword after you, as
your land becomes desolate and your cities become
waste.
• Deuteronomy 28:64…the LORD will scatter you among
all peoples, from one end of the earth to the other end
of the earth…65 "Among those nations you shall find no
rest, and there will be no resting place for the sole of
your foot…
• Regathering is in Deuteronomy 30:4 "If your outcasts
are at the ends of the earth, from there the LORD your
God will gather you, and from there He will bring you
back. 5 "The LORD your God will bring you into the land
which your fathers…
26. Universal, Unilateral Covenant
• Those in the amillennial camp seem to be
willingly ignorant of this universal, unilateral
covenant with “all life,” and especially the other
unilateral covenants with Israel.
• R.C. Sproul in his book “The Truth Of The Cross”
on page 122 says “All covenants have
stipulations….. God’s covenant with Israel was no
exception….”
• An outright denial of God’s unilateral covenants
with Israel are required by their replacement
theology.
27. Unilateral Covenants
• Gen 9:12:7 The Lord appeared to Abram and said, "To
your offspring I will give this land." So he built an altar
there to the Lord, who had appeared to him.
• Gen 13:16-17 I will make your offspring like the dust
of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust,
then your offspring could be counted.
• Gen 15:4-5 a son coming from your own body will be
your heir." 5 He took him outside and said, "Look up at
the heavens and count the stars — if indeed you can
count them." Then he said to him, "So shall your
offspring be."
• Gen 15:18 On that day the Lord made a covenant with
Abram and said, "To your descendants I give this land…
28. Unilateral Covenants
• Gen 17:7….I will establish my covenant as an
everlasting covenant between me and you and your
descendants after you for the generations to come,
• Gen 17:21…But my covenant I will establish with Isaac,
whom Sarah will bear to you by this time next year.
• Gen 22:16…and said, "I swear by myself, declares the
Lord
• Gen 26:3…For to you and your descendants I will give
all these lands
• Gen 28:13…I will give you and your descendants the
land on which you are lying.
29. Unilateral Covenants
• Gen 35:12…The land I gave to Abraham and Isaac
I also give to you, and I will give this land to your
descendants after you."
• Gen 48:4…I will give this land as an everlasting
possession to your descendants after you.'
• 2 Sam 7:8-16…Your house and your kingdom will
endure forever before me; your throne will be
established forever.'"
30. Unilateral Covenants
• Mal 3:6-7…"I the Lord do not change. So you, O
descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed. 7 Ever
since the time of your forefathers you have
turned away from my decrees and have not kept
them. Return to me, and I will return to you,"
says the Lord Almighty.
• Isa 54:5-10..."To me this is like the days of Noah…
• Isa 55:3 Give ear and come to me; hear me, that
your soul may live. I will make an everlasting
covenant with you, my faithful love promised to
David.
31. Unilateral Covenants
• Jer 31:33…"This is the covenant I will make
with the house of Israel after that time,"
declares the Lord. "I will put my law in their
minds and write it on their hearts.
• Jer 33:12-22…'If you can break my covenant
with the day and my covenant with the night…
• Ps 94:14 For the Lord will not reject his
people; he will never forsake his inheritance.
32. Unbreakable Unilateral Covenants
• Ps 89:30-37 "If his sons [David’s] forsake my law and do not
follow my statutes, 31 if they violate my decrees and fail to
keep my commands, 32 I will punish their sin with the rod,
their iniquity with flogging; 33 but I will not take my love
from him, nor will I ever betray my faithfulness. 34 I will
not violate my covenant or alter what my lips have uttered.
35 Once for all, I have sworn by my holiness — and I will not
lie to David — 36 that his line will continue forever and his
throne endure before me like the sun; 37 it will be
established forever like the moon, the faithful witness in the
sky.“
• Luke 1:32 -33…the Lord God will give him the throne of his
father David. 33 He will reign over the house of Jacob forever,
and his kingdom will never end."
33. Unbreakable Unilateral Covenants
• Lev 26:40-45 "'But if they will confess their sins
and the sins of their fathers — their treachery
against me and their hostility toward me, 41
which made me hostile toward them so that I
sent them into the land of their enemies — then
when their uncircumcised hearts are humbled
and they pay for their sin, 42 I will remember my
covenant with Jacob and my covenant with Isaac
and my covenant with Abraham, and I will
remember the land. 43 For the land will be
deserted by them and will enjoy its sabbaths
while it lies desolate without them.
34. Unbreakable Unilateral Covenants
• They will pay for their sins because they
rejected my laws and abhorred my decrees. 44
Yet in spite of this, when they are in the land
of their enemies, I will not reject them or
abhor them so as to destroy them completely,
breaking my covenant with them. I am the
Lord their God. 45 But for their sake I will
remember the covenant with their ancestors
whom I brought out of Egypt in the sight of
the nations to be their God. I am the Lord.'"
35. Unbreakable Unilateral Covenants
• Rom 9:4…the people of Israel. Theirs is the adoption as sons;
theirs the divine glory, the covenants, the receiving of the
law, the temple worship and the promises….
• Rom 9:6…It is not as though God's word had failed. For not all
who are descended from Israel are Israel…
• Rom 9:27…."Though the number of the Israelites be like the
sand by the sea, only the remnant will be saved….
• Rom 11:1… I ask then: Did God reject his people? By no
means!...
• Rom 11:11…Again I ask: Did they stumble so as to fall beyond
recovery? Not at all!...
• Rom 11:25-26…Israel has experienced a hardening in part
until the full number of the Gentiles has come in. 26 And so
all Israel will be saved, as it is written…
• Rom 11:28-30…they are loved on account of the patriarchs,
29 for God's gifts and his call are irrevocable….
36. Promise = Unilateral Covenant
• Gal 3:17-18 What I mean is this: The law, introduced
430 years later, does not set aside the covenant
previously established by God and thus do away with
the promise. 18 For if the inheritance depends on the
law, then it no longer depends on a promise; but God
in his grace gave it to Abraham through a promise. NIV
[promise not a reward]
• Their unfaithfulness does not make God unfaithful!
• Romans 3:4 May it never be! Rather, let God be found
true, though every man be found a liar, as it is written,
"THAT YOU MAY BE JUSTIFIED IN YOUR WORDS, AND
PREVAIL WHEN YOU ARE JUDGED."
37. Only The Remnant Will Be Saved
• Rom 9:27…."Though the number of the
Israelites be like the sand by the sea, only the
remnant will be saved….
• Romans 11:26 and so all Israel will be saved;
just as it is written, "THE DELIVERER WILL
COME FROM ZION, HE WILL REMOVE
UNGODLINESS FROM JACOB."
38. Please Open To Amos 9:9-15, 755 B.C.
• Amos 9:9-15 "For I will give the command, and I
will shake the house of Israel among all the
nations as grain is shaken in a sieve, and not a
pebble will reach the ground. 10 All the sinners
among my people will die by the sword, all
those who say, 'Disaster will not overtake or
meet us.'
• 11 "In that day I will restore David's fallen tent. I
will repair its broken places, restore its ruins,
39. Amos 9:9-15, 755 B.C.
• and build it as it used to be, 12 so that they may
possess the remnant of Edom and all the nations that
bear my name, "declares the Lord, who will do these
things. 13 "The days are coming," declares the Lord,
"when the reaper will be overtaken by the plowman
and the planter by the one treading grapes. New wine
will drip from the mountains and flow from all the
hills. 14 I will bring back my exiled people Israel; they
will rebuild the ruined cities and live in them. They will
plant vineyards and drink their wine; they will make
gardens and eat their fruit. 15 I will plant Israel in
their own land, never again to be uprooted from the
land I have given them,"
40. James, “TABERNACLE OF DAVID”
• Acts 15:16-18 'AFTER THESE THINGS I will
return, AND I WILL REBUILD THE TABERNACLE
OF DAVID WHICH HAS FALLEN, AND I WILL
REBUILD ITS RUINS, AND I WILL RESTORE IT, 17
SO THAT THE REST OF MANKIND MAY SEEK
THE LORD, AND ALL THE GENTILES WHO ARE
CALLED BY MY NAME,' 18 SAYS THE LORD,
WHO MAKES THESE THINGS KNOWN FROM
LONG AGO.
41. Leviticus 26:40,
God Will Remember His Covenant
• NAU Leviticus 26:40 'If they confess their iniquity and
the iniquity of their forefathers, in their unfaithfulness
which they committed against Me, and also in their
acting with hostility against Me-- 41 I also was acting
with hostility against them, to bring them into the land
of their enemies-- or if their uncircumcised heart
becomes humbled so that they then make amends for
their iniquity, 42 then I will remember My covenant…
• NAU 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and
righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from
all unrighteousness.
42. Let’s Read Lev 27:1-34
• Lev 26:1 Israel’s Blessings for Obedience
• Lev 26:14 Punishment for Disobedience
• Lev 27:1 Laws About Vows and things
dedicated to the LORD
43. Leviticus 27:1, Difficult Vows
• NAU Leviticus 27:1 Again, the LORD spoke to Moses,
saying, 2 "Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them,
'When a man makes a difficult vow…
• Matthew 5:33 "Again, you have heard that the ancients
were told, 'YOU SHALL NOT MAKE FALSE VOWS, BUT
SHALL FULFILL YOUR VOWS TO THE LORD.' 34 "But I say
to you, make no oath at all, either by heaven, for it is
the throne of God… 36 "Nor shall you make an oath by
your head, for you cannot make one hair white or
black. 37 "But let your statement be, 'Yes, yes ' or 'No,
no'; anything beyond these is of evil.
44. Leviticus 27:10,
God Takes Vows Seriously
• NAU Leviticus 27:10 'He shall not replace it or
exchange it, a good for a bad, or a bad for a
good; or if he does exchange animal for
animal, then both it and its substitute shall
become holy.
• Change your mind and make a substitute then
both are offered.
45. Leviticus 27:13, Add One-fifth
• NAU Leviticus 27:13 'But if he should ever wish
to redeem it, then he shall add one-fifth of it
to your valuation.
• Change your mind, then add one-fifth to it.
46. Leviticus 27:26, All Firstborn’s Already
Belong To The LORD
• NAU Leviticus 27:26 'However, a firstborn
among animals, which as a firstborn belongs
to the LORD, no man may consecrate it;
whether ox or sheep, it is the LORD'S.
47. As We End Leviticus
• Genesis 1-11, 4 events; Creation, Fall, Flood, and the
Nations
• Genesis 12-50, 4 men, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and
Joseph
• Genesis, Man created, Man Ruined
• Exodus, Man Redeemed
• Leviticus, Man Cleansed to approach and worship God
• What are the requirements for sinful man to approach
infinitely holy God?
• Perfect, spotless blood sacrifice, Jesus, John 1:29
48. Central Theme Of Leviticus
• Leviticus uses the word “holy” more times
than any other NAS book (76 X’s), 1/3 more
than 2nd. Place Isaiah (53 X’s, but it has twice
the chapters).
• Leviticus 11:44 'For I am the LORD your God.
Consecrate[qadash …to be set apart or consecrated ]
yourselves therefore, and be holy[qadosh , sacred,
holy] , for I am holy…
