Dr. Daniel Versick of the University of Rostock wrote a letter of recommendation for Suzan El-Gabry. As her supervisor for her bachelor's thesis, he praised her work implementing a network sniffing software in C to analyze network traffic, noting she was able to quickly learn new technologies. He said she worked systematically and was always ready to improve. Additionally, Dr. Versick described Ms. El-Gabry as friendly, communicative, and a good team player who helped her colleagues. He highly recommends her.
With approximately 1.x years of delay to the US, the term "Data Science" is also gaining speed in Europe. We see more and more job openings for- and business cards of data scientists, new events dedicated to the topic and an increased demand in related education literally every month. In response to this trend, Zurich University of Applied Sciences founded the ZHAW Data Science Laboratory (Datalab) last year.
This talk is to give an updated overview of Data Science in Europe by the example of the Datalab's activities in Switzerland. After a definition and classification of the field, a presentation of real technical projects sets the stage for what Data Science looks like here, offside of internet behemoths and big data clichés. Then, conclusions on the state of the art at least in Switzerland are drawn from evaluating the recent "1st Swiss Workshop on Data Science" event and ZHAW's professional education programme "DAS in Data Science".
With the help of the audience during the subsequent discussion, these results can eventually be extrapolated to the wider European community.

I am pleased to write this letter of recommendation for Ms. Suzan El-Gabry who actively
worked within a research project of Rostock University as a guest student from the German
University in Cairo. I supervised her bachelor thesis, entitled “Delay-Tolerant Cloud: Monitoring
Network Traffic for Acquiring User Preferences and Accounting” (March-August 2015).
Her task was to implement a network sniffing software using C and corresponding Linux
libraries to analyze and evaluate network traffic for finding out user habits. She delivered a
very good thesis even though that low-level network programming in C was completely new
for her. Hence, she clearly proved that she is able to quickly become acquainted with novel
technologies and programming languages. During her work on our project she showed that
she is dealing with problems in a very systematic manner.
During her work on her tasks she was always ready to learn and to improve her knowledge
and experience, and accepted authority. Moreover, she was easily reachable, well-organized,
forward-looking and innovative in the work.
Personally, Ms. El-Gabry is a friendly, communicative, and open-minded person. She has
quickly integrated herself into our research group and into the students’ community of Rostock
University. She did not hesitate to help any of her colleagues, and showed excellent teamwork
skills.
Therefore, it is my pleasure to recommend her. I will be happy to answer any further questions
regarding this recommendation. Feel free to contact me.
Yours faithfully
Daniel Versick
