How’s the weather today?
TOPIC
The Weather
AIMS
To develop and practise:
 Vocabulary: the weather (sunny, rainy, windy, cloudy, snowy, foggy, hot,
cold)
 Structure: wh-word ‘how’ in interrogative forms, verb ‘to be’ (interrogative
and positive forms).
 Integrated skills: Listening, speaking, reading, writing.
AGE
Primary (6-7 years)
TIME
30 minutes approximately
MATERIALS
1. Song, lyrics: ‘The Weather Song’ (1.46 minutes)

2. Activity sheet with a matching exercise.
3. Flashcards: the weather (8).
4. White sheets of paper.
INTRODUCTION
In this lesson learners will be introduced to the song called ‘The weather song’’.
They will listen to the song, complete comprehension activities, make their own
flashcards and practise the weather vocabulary mentioned in the song. They
will also practise asking ‘How’s the weather?’ structure as well as sing the song.
Finally learners can do some extension work as homework based on the song,
in which they will have to look for pictures where the can recognize the weather,

cut and paste them in their notebooks before writing the correct weather word
under them.
PROCEDURE
1. Introduce the topic (5 mins)  Introduce the topic of weather.
Review the weather vocabulary
items that are featured in the song
(sunny, rainy, windy, cloudy,
snowy, foggy, hot, cold) using
flashcards and body gestures.
 Ask learners if they know how the
weather is today/ what the
weather is like today.
2. Listening to the song and
introduction of vocabulary (7 mins)
 Tell learners they are going to
watch and listen to a song about
the weather. Play the song while
showing the learners the
appropriate flashcard.
 Stick the flashcards on the
blackboard.
 Play the song again and stop it
after each weather word. Say
them and make the learners
repeat them as well as pointing
out the appropriate word on the
blackboard. You can use body
gestures or sounds to represent
the meaning of the words.
3. Doing a matching exercise (5-6
mins)
 After giving each learners a
photocopy with the activity,
explain the assignment in which
they will have to match each
image with its appropriate weather
word.
 Then check the activity orally. You
can use the flashcards on the
blackboard to represent the
matching exercise and make the
learners participate.
4. Making your own flashcards (8
mins)
 Divide the class into four groups
and give them some white sheets
of paper.
 Then assign them to make their
own flashcards (only two per
group: hot and snowy, cold and

cloudy).
5. Moving (2 mins)  Get all your learners to stand up
and loudly say each weather
word. Learners have to rise up
and show the correct picture
(according to the ones each group
has) and do body gestures
representing the meaning of the
words.
6. Singing the song (2 mins)  Do the same as the previous
activity while playing the song.
Sing the song together with the
learners.
7. Setting homework (2 mins)  Assign learners to look for some
pictures where they can recognize
the weather, cut and paste them
in their notebooks before writing
the correct weather word under
them.

Lesson plan: The Weather

  • 1. Monge Ana Valentina, Morán Ana Belén Practical 5: Mini-class on Songs How’s the weather today? TOPIC The Weather AIMS To develop and practise:  Vocabulary: the weather (sunny, rainy, windy, cloudy, snowy, foggy, hot, cold)  Structure: wh-word ‘how’ in interrogative forms, verb ‘to be’ (interrogative and positive forms).  Integrated skills: Listening, speaking, reading, writing. AGE Primary (6-7 years) TIME 30 minutes approximately MATERIALS 1. Song, lyrics: ‘The Weather Song’ (1.46 minutes) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pROX81dXflg 2. Activity sheet with a matching exercise. 3. Flashcards: the weather (8). 4. White sheets of paper. INTRODUCTION In this lesson learners will be introduced to the song called ‘The weather song’’. They will listen to the song, complete comprehension activities, make their own flashcards and practise the weather vocabulary mentioned in the song. They will also practise asking ‘How’s the weather?’ structure as well as sing the song. Finally learners can do some extension work as homework based on the song, in which they will have to look for pictures where the can recognize the weather,

Introduce the topic (5 mins)  Introduce the topic of weather. Review the weather vocabulary items that are featured in the song (sunny, rainy, windy, cloudy, snowy, foggy, hot, cold) using flashcards and body gestures.  Ask learners if they know how the weather is today/ what the weather is like today. 2. Listening to the song and introduction of vocabulary (7 mins)  Tell learners they are going to watch and listen to a song about the weather. Play the song while showing the learners the appropriate flashcard.  Stick the flashcards on the blackboard.  Play the song again and stop it after each weather word. Say them and make the learners repeat them as well as pointing out the appropriate word on the blackboard. You can use body gestures or sounds to represent the meaning of the words. 3. Doing a matching exercise (5-6 mins)  After giving each learners a photocopy with the activity, explain the assignment in which they will have to match each image with its appropriate weather word.  Then check the activity orally. You can use the flashcards on the blackboard to represent the matching exercise and make the learners participate. 4. Making your own flashcards (8 mins)  Divide the class into four groups and give them some white sheets of paper.  Then assign them to make their own flashcards (only two per group: hot and snowy, cold and

Learners have to rise up and show the correct picture (according to the ones each group has) and do body gestures representing the meaning of the words. 6. Singing the song (2 mins)  Do the same as the previous activity while playing the song. Sing the song together with the learners. 7. Setting homework (2 mins)  Assign learners to look for some pictures where they can recognize the weather, cut and paste them in their notebooks before writing the correct weather word under them.
