INTRODUCTION

What is Religion?

✔ It's the belief in the existence of a God (the creator of the universe with a supernatural power)

✔ It's a focal interest that is very important and helps you in your life

✔ It's a way of life that knows what is right and what is wrong, what's important in life and what's

not so important

What is Religious Education?

✔ It's a subject that teaches you morality (moral values), beliefs and a good behaviour in your life to
make you feel better

✔ To feel better, religious people have faith in something that they cannot see or in another
different thing or person

✔ The meaning of faith is: a strong belief in a supernatural power that controls human destiny
(religious people can't see their god but they have faith in him / it).

**Now, we're going to experience faith in today's lesson with a game.

B falls back and A catches! B is not allowed to look back ( to help the pupils I'll give them a
demonstration).

This is faith! You trust someone to catch you.

What makes up a person? What kind of school subjects do you think are necessary for an
integral personality?

Everybody needs to develop the personality, the mind in different aspects (I draw a person on the
board and around it label all the parts of a human or I use the photocopy**).

ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI

Francis was born into a very rich family. When he was young, he spent money freely and he had a
good time.
When he was 21, his life changed dramatically. He spent a few months as a prisoner-of-war in a town
and then he returned to Assisi ill. When he got better, he tried to return to his old habits, but he
didn't enjoy as before.
After a pilgrimage to Rome he gave up his old habits completely, and spent his time caring of the
lepers and rebuilding some broken old churches.
He had a lot of problems with his family but he carried on his way. He gave away his possessions and
spent the rest of his life teaching and caring for people in poverty.
Some people thought he was mad but today the Franciscans are the biggest religious order in the
world.

MAHATMA GANDHI

He was born in 1869 and he died in 1948. He was a great Hindu and a very important political and
spiritual leader of India. He was the father of the theory of non-violent. He worked hard to achieve
reconciliation between the Indian Hindu majority and the Muslim minority. He fought for the
Indian independence against the British Government. He lived simply. He made his own clothes. He
was vegetarian (nonviolence applied to animals).
He was assassinated by a Hindu extremist (radical ) in New Delhi on 30 January 1948.

MOTHER TERESA OF CALCUTTA

She was born in Albania in 1910. When she was a young girl, she went to Ireland to become a nun
and then she was sent to India. When she was 36 she asked for permission from her Order (the
Sisters of Loreto) to teach children in Calcutta and she decided to serve the poor, the sick, the
hungry and the dying people of Calcutta. Then she formed a new religious order, The Missionary
Sisters of Charity. Now there are houses of The Sisters of Charity in many countries of the world. The
Sisters of Charity eat the simplest food and don't have any possessions. They care for the sick and
hungry people, for example alcoholics, homeless, AIDS sufferers. In 1976 Mother Teresa won the
Nobel Peace Prize.

MARTIN LUTHER KING Jr.

Martin Luther King was a tremendously important Christian leader who worked to defend the rights of
black people and the racial equality between blacks and whites in the USA. In 1950s and 1960s
discrimination against black people was common.
Luther King was born in 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. He was an excellent student in school. His parents
were ministers and he was a minister in Alabama, too. He married Coretta Scott in 1953. In 1955, in
Alabama, a black woman, Rosa Parks, refused to give her bus seat up to a white and for this reason
she was arrested. Black people refused to use the buses in the area as a protest. This boycott was
led by Martin Luther King. He used to say that love is the only force to transform an enemy into a
friend. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. He organized nonviolent marches to protest racial
injustice. He was assassinated in 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee.

The four Sundays before Christmas is Advent (from the beginning of December). It means 'coming'

Christians celebrate Jesus' birth on December 25th and the visit of the Three Wise Men.

People exchange Christmas cards, presents, special meals and special decoration in their houses and

in the streets.

➢ LENT

It's the period of 40 days before Easter. It starts in Ash Wednesday and ends in Holy week.

➢ EASTER

It's the most important festival in the Christian calendar. It's the commemoration of Jesus' death. Palm

Sunday is the first day of Holy Week. It celebrates Jesus' arrival in Jerusalem. On Maundy Thursday

Christians remember the Last Supper. On Good Friday Christians remind that Jesus died on the cross.

Easter Sunday marks Jesus' resurrection. In many churches there are flowers and wonderful music.

People buy Easter eggs because they are a symbol of new life.

1.1 THE WORLD OF JESUS.

was born in Palestine (Middle East) around 5 / 6 BCE

JESUS he was a Jew

he was brought up in Galilee, Nazareth, in the north of Palestine

About this time the Romans controlled Palestine ( better roads, more trade / Most Jews hated them)

they took part in a big revolt and

Romans destroyed the temple in Jerusalem.

The Galileans were Jews but they spoke with a different accent and they

were very independent. They and the Judeans hated the Samaritans.

2.2 THE BIRTH OF JESUS

He was born in Bethlehem, in a stable (in 5/6 BCE)

His name, Jesus, means 'God saves'

The Three Wise Men (the Magi) and the shepherds were the first visitors to the stable

Their visit was very important because:

- they brought 3 gifts (gold, frankincense and myrrh) to the child (as to a King)

- they were not Jews (they were Gentiles, that's to say, Jesus comes to help everybody)

2.9 PARABLES

A story with a special message / lesson for people to learn

Jesus wanted to teach the people about God

The most well-known parable was that of the Good Samaritan

In this story a Jewish man, who went from Jerusalem to Jericho, was attacked, robbed and left

on the road. Two Jewish travellers passed by him and didn't help him. Perhaps they thought

that he was dead. Then a Samaritan stopped and helped him. The message was everyone is

equally important for God.

a) Entering Jerusalem

Jesus arrived in Jerusalem on a donkey (it was a symbol of peace)

d) Arrest

After the Last Supper, Jesus went to Gethsemane (Mount of Olives) to pray to God with his three

Criminals were nailed to a cross and left to die
The place where criminals were put to death (painful and long) in Jerusalem was a small hill called
Golgotha
Criminals were on a cross for hours / days before they died
Romans left criminal bodies in the open without burial
The journey to the cross is called the Via Dolorosa ('the way of sorrows')

The pilgrims visit this way on Good Friday (to remember the death of Jesus)

Three women visited the tomb on Sunday morning
it was empty
Two angels appeared and told the women that Jesus was alive
They returned to tell the news to the disciples
Jesus appeared to his disciples many times and told them what he wanted them to do

to baptise people
to teach these new disciples everything about Jesus

Why are people in developing countries poor? / Which problems there are?

a) Debt
more than they receive in aid
corrupt leaders (spend money in weapons, palaces / no hospitals or schools)

they sell coffee, cocoa... very cheap
they pay huge tariffs if export

c) Exploitation of workers
low salaries (wages) in plantations
children used as slave labour (to make trainers, clothes, toys, footballs, jewellery)

no education

illnesses (malnutrition, malaria, pneumonia, measles)
