POEM
It is a piece of writing which the
word are chosen for their
beauty and sound and are
carefully arranged, often in
short lines.
ELEMENTS OF
POETRY
1. LINE
A line is a unit of language into which a poem is
divided.
Example:
Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
2. STANZA
A stanza is used to describe the main building block of
a poem. It is a unit of poetry composed of line that
relate to a similar thought or topic – like a paragraph
in prose or a verse in a song.
Example:
Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
3. RHYTHM
It can be described as the beat and pace of a
poem.
The best method in understanding this is to read
a poem aloud and understand the stressed
and unstressed syllables.
4. METER
It is a unit of rhythm in poetry, the pattern of the
beats. It is also called the foot.
Poetic rhythms are measured in metrical feet.
Example:
A line of a poem with 10 syllables
(stressed and unstressed pattern) = Pentameter
(5 metrical feet)
5. RHYME
It is the repetition 0f identical or similar
concluding syllables in different words.
FREE VERSE – Poems without rhyme
6. RHYME SCHEME
The pattern of rhyme at the end of
each is called the rhyme scheme.
