ELEMENTS &
PRINCIPLES OF ART
LESSON NO. 4
APPROPRIATION

artwork.
▪Usage of prints, images, and icons to produce another art form.

▪Revives interests to existing forms of art.
▪Is appreciation still acceptable?
▪Do you think that the pre-existing artwork used in
appropriation is defaced or devalued?
APPROPRIATION
PERFORMANCE
▪Performance refers to artwork created by or presented to
an audience.
▪Performance as an element can also include the
processes used by the artist to create the work.
▪Performance evolved to “emphasize spontaneous
elements of chance”.
▪Interpreting various human activities such as ordinary
activities such as chores, routines and rituals, to socially
relevant themes such as poverty, commercialism and war.
PERFORMANCE
DESTRUCTION
▪Destruction refers to when an artist uses
methods to show damage in or to their
artwork.
▪Many times, this destruction is documented
as a process, which in return, becomes the
artwork itself.
DESTRUCTION
SPACE
▪Site specific art forms – art
form that is performed and
positioned in a place specific
space such as public places.
SPACE
PERSPECTIVE
▪Perspective (such as localized, forced or
anamorphic) in contemporary art refers to
when an artist works with the real space
surrounding the artwork itself.
▪Perspective can play a role in the way the
viewer looks at the artwork or even the
way the work is perceived.
PERSPECTIVE
HYBRIDITY
▪Usage of unconventional materials, mixing of unlikely
materials to produce an artwork.
▪Blending of new or unusual materials with traditional
medium.
▪The incorporation of these materials, such as recycled or
industrial materials, plays a vital role in the meaning of
the artwork.
▪For example, coffee for painting; miniature sculptures
using crayons.
HYBRIDITY
TECHNOLOGY
▪Usage of technology in the creation and
dissemination of artworks.
▪Video phenomenon from MTV to Youtube.
▪Recording performances, video posting,
sharing, live streaming.
TECHNOLOGY
TEXT
▪Contemporary artists utilize text in their art
to push past the concept that text is only
meant to be read.
▪The additional meaning from the text adds
another level of depth that cannot be created
by shape and color alone.
