• An attended installation requires a
user’s continuous involvement during
the installation process.
• This installation method requires the
least amount of preparation.
by Rashid Khan
Unattended Installation
Unattended Installation
• An unattended installation does not
require constant user involvement
during the installation process.
• The installation can be initiated by
pre-configuring an answer file called
unattend.txt.
by Rashid Khan
Unattended Installation
Unattended Installation
Unattended installations are beneficial:
– When the operating system is to be installed
on several similar servers.
– For deploying a large number of client
operating systems such as Windows XP or
Windows 2000 Professional.
• This method WILL NOT BE DISCUSSED

Network Installation
Network Installation
For installing Windows Server 2003 on
computers connected to an existing
network:
• Copy the I386 directory from the installation
CD to a shared folder on the network.
• Copy files, such as answer files and device
drivers, to the same folder.
• Map the folder to a drive letter on the
machine where the operating system is to be
installed.
by Rashid Khan
Imaged Installation
Imaged Installation
• Imaged installation is useful when
Windows Server 2003 needs to be
set up on several identical
computers.
• Disk image is used to perform
imaged installations.

Installation
Clean installation:
– Refers to installing the operating system
on a computer hard drive that does not
contain any prior operating system or
data.
– Eliminates any chance of incompatibilities
with older software.
– Provides the new operating system
maximum control over certain aspects of
hardware configuration.

Upgrade installation:
– New operating system replaces the
existing operating system.
– Existing configuration settings and
installed applications, and data are
preserved.
– It does not support downgrades.

Partitioning
Partitioning
• A hard drive partition is a discrete
portion of the hard drive.
• The partition is used as a structure
for organizing data on the drive.

• File system organizes the partition
and tracks the location of files on the

Licensing
The two licensing modes for Windows
Server 2003 are:
– Per-Server licensing.
– Per-Device or Per User licensing.
by Rashid Khan
Per-Server Licensing
Per-Server Licensing
• Per-Server licensing is based on the
total number of concurrent
connections to a particular server.
• It is ideal for small networks.

Per-Device or Per-User
Licensing
Licensing
• Per Device licensing requires a
license for every connection to the
server.
• There is no limit on simultaneous
connections.
• It is ideal for large networks where
client devices connect to more than
one server.

• Products can be activated only on one computer
system, thus eliminating the value of illicit copies

Editor's Notes

  • #3 It is essential to check the compatibility of the hardware with the new operating system before installing the operating system.
  • #4 This utility will not work properly if the current operating system cannot be upgraded to Windows Server 2003 directly. Examples of operating systems that cannot be upgraded to Windows Server 2003 include Windows 98 and Windows XP.
  • #5 The HCL is used to check hardware compatibility with Windows 2000, Windows Me, and Windows XP. HCL does not address Windows Server 2003 hardware compatibility issues. Windows Server Catalog provides a simple navigation system, which makes it easy to find compatibility information for a piece of hardware.
  • #6 Teaching Tip: Tell the students about winnt.exe and winnt32.exe. Discuss the switches that are associated with both the executables.
  • #7 Attended installations are time consuming.
  • #8 The answer file contains all the necessary settings and options that are selected and entered during an attended installation.
  • #9 Unattended installation requires a lot of planning; it may be essential to run through at least one attended installation to ensure that all the settings and options entered in the answer file are accurate.
  • #10 Teaching Tip: Make students aware that network and imaged installations fall under the broader category of unattended installation. Students can be taught to perform an unattended installation over a network.
  • #11 Mapping refers to configuring the shared network folder to be treated like a drive to help the installation program find its files.
  • #12 Disk image is an exact image of the hard drive and its contents. Windows Server 2003 does not make disk images. However, it includes tools that can be used to set up the images and deploy them on other computers. Teaching Tip: Provide the students with names of disk imaging software. If resources are available, a demonstration of disk imaging software could be provided.
  • #15 The benefit of upgrade installation is the minimal time required to reinstall applications, and reconfigure the hardware and the operating system. Care must be taken while upgrading the operating system of a server administering a domain-based network.
  • #16 The Windows Server 2003 installation program allows a user to: Install the operating system to an existing partition. Delete existing partitions. Create new partitions of varying sizes.
  • #17 NTFS: Allows file- and folder-level access permissions to be set. Allows files to be encrypted. Permits selective compression of folders to improve storage management. FAT: Is required to boot the server using an older operating system that does not support NTFS and to still access files. Discussion Point: Review the file systems and their attributes with the students. Ask them to compare the pros and cons of FAT and NTFS.
  • #18 Teaching Tip: Tell the students that they can learn more about Microsoft’s licensing at http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/Default.asp
  • #19 By default, five concurrent connections are allowed.
  • #20 Per Device or Per User licensing was earlier called Per Seat licensing.
  • #21 Each computer on the network must have a unique identity to be able to communicate on a network. Server names should not contain spaces nor be made up entirely of numbers.
  • #22 Passwords can be weak or strong. Weak passwords are easy to type and remember. Strong passwords are difficult to guess. They must be at least six characters long, and consist of upper and lowercase characters, numbers, and special characters. Strong passwords must not include any form of the word “administrator.” Teaching Tip: Ensure that the students understand the importance of secure administrator and user passwords.
  • #29 Once the regional settings have been confirmed, the user would be required to personalize the software.
  • #30 After the product key code is provided, the user would be required to select the licensing mode.
  • #31 After the required name and password is provided, the user would be required to: Provide the modem dialing information. Set the date, time, and time zone in the Date and Time Settings dialog box.
  • #32 After providing the information for network settings, the user would be required to choose between joining a workgroup or a computer domain.
  • #33 The first indication of a successful Windows Server 2003 installation is that the system effectively reboots into the new operating system at the end of the process.
  • #34 The Ctrl-Alt-Delete key combination prevents malicious programs from displaying fake logon prompts to record user names and passwords. The first logon to Windows is done using the administrator account and password. A special window titled “Manage Your Server” appears when Windows Server 2003 starts for the first time. This window provides a variety of options for configuring the operating system to handle server roles.
  • #35 Software piracy refers to the illicit copying and distribution of software. The time limit for activating Windows Server 2003 is set to 30 days. Teaching Tip: Students can find out more about Microsoft Product Activation at http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/basics/activation/
  • #38 Windows Update makes it easy to correct critical flaws in the operating system. Teaching Tip: Information about Microsoft security and a link to Windows Update can be found at http://www.microsoft.com/security/
  • #40 The Automatic Updates tab on the My Computer Properties dialog box is used to access the configuration settings for Windows Update. The “Notify Before Downloading” option receives information about available updates when the user is connected to the Internet, and notifies users about the same. The “Download Updates and Notify Before Installing” option transfers the update files to the computer as they become available. The users review them and choose the required update for installation. The “Automatically Download and Install” option automatically installs the available updates at the stipulated period and reboots the system if required.
