This document provides an overview of verbs for a lesson on verbs. It outlines 6 main rules for verbs: 1) verbs come after subjects, 2) verbs can be one or two words, 3) there are action and non-action verbs, 4) some action verbs take objects, 5) some action verbs do not take objects, 6) the types of verbs to master include simple present, past, and future tense, present and past continuous, present perfect continuous, past perfect continuous, present perfect, and past perfect. Examples are given for each rule and type of verb.

WHAT ARE THE FIRST THINGS I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT
VERBS?
RULE 1: It comes after the subject in a sentence.
EX: The girl wears a green dress.
My kindergarten teacher scolded me a lot back then.

RULE 2: Verbs do not often come in one word, they sometimes come in two words.
EX: The lady was teaching at the college.
I have been ironing the clothes for one hour.

RULE 3: We have ACTION VERBS (what Subjects do)
EX: I ate an apple on my way here.
The cat chases the lizard.

RULE 4: We also have NON-ACTION VERBS (they do not describe any actions, nor
have any particular meaning)
EX: The women are not local citizens.
The ship was at the port already.

RULE 5: For ACTIONS VERBS, sometimes they do take an object after them; we call
them TRANSITIVE VERBS
EX: My parents wash the dishes.
I told my mother about the happy news.

RULE 6: Under ACTION VERBS, sometimes they do not take any object and this is
called INTRANSITIVE VERBS
EX: We sat on the bench and just talked.

THESE ARE THE TYPES OF VERBS THAT I NEED TO
MASTER:
1) SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE: The boy plays tennis.
2) SIMPLE PAST TENSE: The boy played tennis last month.
3) FUTURE TENSE: The boy will be playing tennis next
December.
4) PRESENT CONTINUOUS: The boy is playing tennis now.
5) PAST CONTINUOUS: The boy was playing tennis when I
called him.
6) PRESENT PERFECT CONTINUOUS: The boy has been
playing tennis for nearly two hours now.
7) PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS: The boy had been playing
tennis when he received a phone call.
8) PRESENT PERFECT: The boy has played tennis this
morning; now he is just tired.
9) PAST PERFECT: The boy had played tennis a week ago.
