This document compares the lifespan, energy usage, cost, and environmental impact of incandescent light bulbs, compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs), and light emitting diodes (LEDs). LEDs last approximately 50,000 hours, much longer than incandescent bulbs which only last 1,200 hours or CFLs at 8,000 hours. LEDs also use the least amount of power, around 6-8 watts compared to 60 watts for incandescent and 13-15 watts for CFLs. As a result, LEDs have the lowest operating costs and carbon dioxide emissions when used over the course of a year.
