Charles Ponzi was an Italian immigrant who ran one of the first documented "Ponzi schemes" in the early 1900s, promising investors 50% returns in just 45 days but ultimately paying earlier investors with money from newer investors. His scheme collapsed after just over a year when he was unable to repay all participants, leading to his arrest and imprisonment for fraud.
