Modifying your themes design - Learning CSS - Atlanta WordPress users groupEvan Mullins
The presentation overviews the internet, teaches us how to spell HTML and other web programming "languages" that come together to form a WordPress website, like HTML, CSS & PHP. We even discussed web development tools like FTP clients and which text editors to use. We went over what makes up a wordpress theme and then the concept of child themes. Discussed the process of creating your own child theme with just a couple files and that you can create a child theme for any theme out there. We demoed how to view source and dissect any website, but more importantly, how to inspect elements on your site and live-edit the css for any element. Then to write these CSS rules to our theme to lock in the edits in your child theme.
Getting started with MySQL on Amazon Web ServicesRonald Bradford
Setting up MySQL on Amazon Web Services (AWS)
Ronald Bradford, Principal at 42SQL will step you though getting started with AWS.
This introduction will assume you no nothing about AWS, and have no account. With Internet access via a Browser and a valid Credit Card, you can have your own running Web Server on the Internet in under 10 minutes, just point and click.
We will step into some more detail using the supplied command line tools for more advanced usage.
SOAP Web Services have a well established role in the enterprise, but aside from the many benefits of the WS-* standards, SOAP and XML also carry additional baggage for developers. Consequently, REST Web Services are gaining tremendous popularity within the developer community. This session will begin by comparing and contrasting the basic concepts of both SOAP and REST Web Services. Building on that foundation, Sam Brannen will show attendees how to implement SOAP-based applications using Spring-WS 2.0. He will then demonstrate how to build a similar REST-ful application using Spring MVC 3.0. The session will conclude with an in-depth look at both server-side and client-side development as well as efficient integration testing of Web Services using the Spring Framework.
Overview of web services, SOAP, WSDL and UDDI.
A web service provides a defined set of functionality on a machine-processable interface.
The web service interface is described in a formal language like WSDL that allows creating code to access the service thus simplifying web service consumer (client) and provider (server) development.
In big web services, the interface is typically described in WSDL while the access to the service makes use of the SOAP message protocol.
SOAP has its roots in remote object access but is now a general message based and asynchronous transport mechanism.
SOAP is typically carried in HTTP (HyperText Transmission Protocol), but other message based protocols like SMTP (Email) or plain TCP could be used as well.
WSDL provides a formalized description of an interface that is coarsely separated in an abstract service interface definition containing operations and data types, a transport binding that describes how the web service is accessed and finally a description of the location (address) under which a web service is accessible.
UDDI (Universal Description and Discovery Protocol) was meant to become the standard protocol for some kind of a public yellow pages where publicly accessible web services would be listed. Lack of industry interest, however, prevented UDDI to gain widespread use.
Web services tutorial slides from my session at DPC 2012 in Amsterdam. In this 3-hour session we built the simplest possible service, and then extended it, looking at RPC, REST and SOAP along the way.

Large Drupal projects will generally have a themer or five working alongside the developers, site builders and designers. Themers are the magicians who transform what Drupal wants to do into what the designer wants it to do.
Smaller projects also usually need someone on the team who can make sense of Drupal's output, knows more CSS and JS than anyone else and can configure Views with their eyes closed.
The thing is — and whisper this, if possible redundancy concerns you — we can bypass the themer entirely.
With some simple configuration, a site builder can get Drupal to output exactly the semantic, lightweight markup that any modern front-end designer would be proud of. The designer can be left alone to write the most appropriate HTML, CSS and JS, while the site builder need only choose a couple of options when putting together content types, views and panels to make Drupal behave.
A friendly developer may have to lend a hand every now and then, but that’s it. You can get rid of the themer altogether.

Progressive Enhancement 2.0 (jQuery Conference SF Bay Area 2011)Nicholas Zakas
In the beginning, progressive enhancement was simple: HTML layered with CSS layered with JavaScript. That worked fine when there were two browsers, but in today's world of multiple devices and multiple browsers, it's time for a progressive enhancement reboot. At the core is the understanding that the web is not print - the same rules don't apply. As developers and consumers we've been fooled into thinking about print paradigms for too long. In this talk, you'll learn just how different the web is and how the evolution of progressive enhancement can lead to better user experiences as well as happier developers and users.
