Training and development professionals often bemoan the lack of apparent initiative in their trainees. Learning professionals spend huge sums of money creating or acquiring skill aligned libraries of learning content, only to watch almost helplessly as learners refuse to engage with any training available that isn’t mandatory.
How can we cultivate a learning culture, when we cannot get the learners to drink?
Join Dr. Allen Partridge, Adobe eLearning Evangelist and Lifelong Learning Addict for this one hour exploration into the power of gamification, incentives, skill guidance and ease of use, to motivate and inspire the people you train to cultivate a learning culture in your organization.
This webinar will demonstrate these concepts using Adobe Captivate Prime, Adobe’s new full feature Learning Management System.
2. That’s me, Allen Partridge. I’m an educator, a game & simulation developer, and a learning
addict. I live in Oregon, and love to hike in the mountains that surround my home at the
southern edge of the Williamette Valley.
3. Our Perspective…
I bought this huge library of
training content for my learners.
They don’t ever use it. I think
they must just be lazy.
4. Their Perspective…
Like I need 400 Lessons on how to use
PowerPoint
You mean those irritating annual torture
sessions, where I ignore the reading and
guess the questions until I get it right?
You do know that I have an actual job
to do here, right?
5. We hear learners asking …
• Why should I prioritize this?
• Is this a waste of my time?
• How will this benefit me?
• Will this impact my annual review?
• Will this help me do my job better?
• Will this enhance my career?
• Is this more important than other tasks?
• Who will know that I’ve done this?
6. We all have choices
What motivates you to do one thing
versus another?
What kinds of things de-motivate you?
7. Extrinsic vs. Intrinsic Motivators
External Internal
Positive
Negative
The only option to create long term sustainable
motivation is this one.
To learn more about what motivates 21st Century
employees, have a look at Daniel Pink’s inspiring
Ted Talk about motivation.
8. So what can I do to aid intrinsic motivation?
• Autonomy
• Desire to be self-directed
• Mastery
• Urge to get better at things
• Think about playing a game
• Why do you want to level up?
• Why do you improve your skills?
• Purpose
• Desire to make a contribution
9. Interesting application by Steve Smith
In an article for HR Zone, Steve Smith extends this
paradigm to Maslow’s Hierarchy
Notably, the motivators that Smith Identifies, align
with those that Pink identifies related to intrinsic
motivation.
The sense of belonging, confidence in self and
desire for self actualization (purpose) are huge
intrinsic motivations

• Trainers often use competencies &
skills to organize the types of
training created and assigned to
learners
• By aligning your learning to skills,

people with the money, how

Create a participatory culture that results in users embracing learning rather than dodging it. Improve course completion rates by making learning exciting through gamification, leaderboards and badges. Enable users to learn on the move on their mobile devices. Ensure learner satisfaction by improvising training based on course effectiveness, and feedback from learners and their managers.
Revolutionize the way interactive eLearning content is consumed. The unique fluidic player provides learners with a unified playback experience for virtually any kind of content, so that they can play videos, PDFs, PPTs, DOCX, SCORM and AICC-compliant packages, all within a single player without having to download any plugins. Engage learners with high quality video streaming and a distributed delivery mechanism that serves content with minimum latency.
Group modules as you want, to create structured courses, learning programs or curricula. Keeping your organizational learning and certifications current and consistent is as easy as updating the modules and saving them as newer versions.
Each module is saved with tags metadata which can be used to search modules.
Now allow learners to resume learning even when they are offline. The Adobe Captivate Prime app*, downloads learning content, makes it available for offline access and auto syncs when the learner is back online.
Get actionable insights into your learning initiatives through personalized real-time dashboards. Keep tabs on how learners, departments, functional teams and partners are doing on their learning objectives.
