Map making for kids to help support #VisualizeNoMalariaAnya A'Hearn
Over the last couple of months, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to meet with the 4th and 5th Grade Girls Club at a San Francisco school and get them excited about all things data visualization and mapping. In a couple lunches and after school workshops we learned about cartography, map construction, and design, built our own outrageously fun custom maps of San Francisco using Mapbox, and finally contributed to the #VisualizeNoMalaria project by tracing buildings for Humanitarian OpenStreetMap. Here is my presentation for all the lessons.
This document discusses new approaches to interactive storytelling using emerging technologies. It describes three immersive dream stories told through the voices of Norah Jones and Jack White. Users can participate in the experiences and control characters using WebGL technology in a 3D virtual world. The document suggests that technology opens up new possibilities when combined with design and art, questioning how leadership can inspire action. It advocates that innovation arises at the intersection of art and design.
APA 2013 Planning in the Shadow of Gotham (S639)Joseph Horwedel
This session considers how cities plan and succeed in the shadow of larger cities. The focus of the presentation was on the interrelations ship between San Jose and San Francisco economically and socially. It was presented at the 2013 Planning Association National Conference in Chicago.
The document discusses strategic plans for city planning and management in San Jose, California. It outlines the city's goals of accommodating population and job growth while reducing vehicle miles traveled and greenhouse gas emissions through walkable neighborhoods, transit options, and complete "regional hubs." Metrics proposed to track progress include miles of trails per capita, traffic levels of service, and acres of parkland per thousand residents. The document also reviews the city's "Green Vision" environmental goals and reports progress made toward targets for 2022.
