This document discusses the author's experiences completing various leadership assessments. The assessments revealed that the author has a free-rein leadership style that emphasizes subordinates over themselves, moderately high emotional intelligence, and a tendency to collaborate when resolving conflicts. The author also discusses experiences they have had leading in academic and family contexts, and how their mother and son with Down syndrome have influenced their leadership development.

1. The relationship between a servant and leadership is paradoxical but achievable. According to Dierendonck & Patterson (2010), “the central meaning of it was that the great leader is first experienced as a servant to others”. This allows an individual to not only work their way from the bottom but learn humility on the way to the top. As they work their way through different stages or hierarchy of a job they learn the value and appreciate it. These individuals will make an impression on others because their driving force is to serve others and are focused on leadership, management service and personal growth (Dierendonck & Patterson, 2010).
2. Servant leadership could be viewed as a paradox because the perception about the two words individually is that they would be opposites. A servant is someone that is at the bottom of the food chain, so to speak. Someone who does not make decisions, but is told what to do and has little to no say in the matter. A leader on the other hand is at the front of the organization. They are someone who makes the decisions and delegates work for others to do. Because individually these two roles are so different someone could find the phrase servant leadership ironic before really sitting down and thinking about what the phrase means as a whole.
3. Servant Leadership on paper is a paradox, yes. While the dictionary definitions of each word of the phrase 'Servant Leader' may seem opposites, when combined into a phrase they are a proven type of leadership, which leads by serving rather than controlling. When acting as a servant leader, one focuses on the needs of others, putting them in a higher regard than your own needs. It is important for a servant leader to have empathy and listen to their team members. A servant leader supports their team, focusing on building and enriching a community rather than just focusing on deadlines and goals. A traditional leader who does not employ a servant leadership lifestyle is often seen as selfish. They view themselves as exclusively then one who's in charge, and do not take advantage of the benefits of active listening to their team or hearing their input. Unfortuantely, often times in this leadership mentality, the credit for ideas that the group comes up with is awarded exclusively to the leader.
In the long term, as servant leadership is highly effective. Servant leadership leads to trust, good relationships, and a good working environment. CASE 1I took the recommended Leadership Training and Developm.docxwendolynhalbert
CASE 1
I took the recommended Leadership Training and Development report: Values in Action Inventory of Strengths assessment. My values identified from this assessment were as follows: love, fairness, kindness, hope, gratitude, honesty, teamwork, leadership, forgiveness, perseverance, humility, perspective, zest, prudence, creativity, judgement, bravery, curiosity, self-regulation, social intelligence, humor, appreciation of beauty & excellence, love of learning, spirituality. I was surprised and overwhelmed with joy to see love as my number one value. Though I have a ton of love to give, I feel that I have a hard time express my love for others. Knowing that this assessment identified love as a significant strength gives me great strength that even though I don’t recognize my outward display of love, it is received by others. I was also surprised to see love of learning so low on the list. I love to learn new things, I’m just not one to pick up a book and read I would rather learn new things using the hands-on method. It is possible that my inability to identify my out-ward displays of love have clouded my perception on thought of a love to learn. I would have thought that leadership and social intelligence would have been higher on the list. I love to lead and mentor the new airman coming into the military. I’m not surprised at all by spiritual and humor being so low on my list. I’m not very good with making jokes, most people only laugh at me when I am trying to be serious. I am not a religious person therefore spiritual feel right where it should have. After taking this self-examination I will need to learn how to use my strength better rather than using my weaknesses. This test was very eye opening for me and will allow me to become a better leader along the way.
I scored fairly high on all sections of the emotional intelligence self-assessment in chapter 3 of Sterret (2006). I scored a 20 on self-awareness, 22 on self-confidence, 19 on self-control, 19 on empathy, 21 on motivation, and 21 on social competency. The results seem to be in line with what I would have expected. I have been the enlisted leader of a section for the last 6 years and have learned if the person working for you, believes you care about them they tend to work much harder to support your efforts. On the leadership assessment I scored mostly 5 or 4 with a couple 3. I completed one assessment and sent three assessments to airmen that previously worked and currently work for me, all the results were relatively comparable. The fellow airmen were initially not able to identify the links between their strengths and weakness’, as I would hope. I think I scored myself lower than the troops scored me, because I tend to have higher expectations for myself than others. It was nice to see how people that have worked for you grade you when it comes to your leadership. It gives me inspiration that I am actually doing a good job leading the personnel under me.

Part 1
Currently, I believe I lead a few people at work because I used to do their jobs and I know how to do them best, however, I believe that because of my work ethic and my willingness to help everyone makes me successful in my current position. 3 of 7 secrets from the article" 7 Secrets of Servant Leadership" that will help me be successful going forward after this class include Listening intently and observe closely, demonstrate persistence, hold myself as well as others hold accountable for commitments. Within this class I’ve stated my leaders hear, but do not listen. I need to take my own advice and ensure I listen to make changes when needed. I’ve also complained that the leaders within my organization do not make changes after receiving complaints, instead of giving up so easily, I need to remain persistent to show my colleagues that anyone within the company can perceive and make a difference as Economy (2015) states leaders serve their people. I believe I already do a good job of holding myself accountable (my mother ensured I have too much catholic guilt built in) however, I do not give other the chance to fail or hold others accountable. It is important to allow my colleagues to fail or to ensure they are held accountable because they will learn and grow.
Part 2
After reviewing the “Tony Robbins Create a New Story” (Hamilton 2013) and after taking this class, I have found that I need to improve my communication skills further as well as continue to step out of my comfort zone and lead from where I am within my organization. I need to improve my communication skills because I am an introvert and have anxiety issues around group functions where others have no issues and actually enjoying and participating in these activities.
To answer the videos question, I’m very happy with life in general. I am in a very supportive and happy marriage, I have a very sweet and happy two-year-old son, I have a job that I don’t hate to go to everyday and generally enjoy the company of many of my co-workers. However, I have failed as a friend, it’s hard for me to keep up with social functions due to my introverted ways. I also am working to make more time for myself, and my body, however I’m 20 weeks pregnant so I’m not going to be able to do anything about that any time soon. I believe I am happy because I have worked toward making my life with what I always wanted it to be. However, one thing I did not achieve in my life “blue print” is obtaining my degree. I’ve noticed that the younger generation has finally caught up with me in education. I put off going back to school for eight years and recently we hired a front desk person that has a bachelor degree. With this aspect as well as my 30th birthday rapidly approaching, I decided to go back to school my only regret is not going back sooner, however my employee just recently offered tuition assistance and I am unsure If I would be able to afford it without this assistance. I am already wor ...

Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.
John F. Kennedy
Leadership is the ability to lead other people in the accomplishment of a common task. How does a leader accomplish this? What are the necessary
qualities and/or traits a successful leader must possess
to lead? No doubt, the task at hand with the leaders of
ASPSN is to further the mission and vision of the organi-
zation. I never really thought of myself as a leader until
I became actively involved in ASPSN where many of my
past mentors recognized my abilities and nurtured them.
When you have to do personal inventory of the quali-
ties that you possess as a leader, it can sure by an eye
opening experience. I sometimes think I know what my
effective and “good” qualities are but, then again, when
I look critically at my inventory, I fi nd myself lacking. In
this instance I must positively nurture the qualities I do
possess as I fulfi ll my obligations as President of ASPSN
and on my journey, develop and nurture those I did
not even know I had. So, to do my personal inventory
I decided to examine emotional intelligence (EI). I fi rst
heard of EI when I was participating in a formal ad-
vanced practice nurse mentor/mentee program and fi nd
EI to be simple and applicable to myself as a leader. It
also appeared to encompass many of the qualities that I
developed growing up: honesty, integrity, empathy, and
motivation.
Emotional intelligence was originally proposed in
1990 as an effective barometer for effectively dealing
with emotions within the self and others (Salovey &
Mayer, 1990). Salovey and Mayer (1990) described EI
as the ability to perceive, appraise, and express emo-
tion, access and process emotional information, gen-
erate feelings, understand emotional knowledge, and
regulate emotions for emotional and intellectual growth.

I like to make my friends embolden and powerful and not diminished and powerless. From the responses I got, I can describe myself as a person who is ready to learn. From the experience with all those people, I can clearly see that I have the eager to acquire new things. I am a person of great ideas and courage in making the very problem that I have to face as an individual or as a group to be an opportunity to grow myself. Sometime I have to stay fearless; I am never afraid to make risk or even mistakes, I choose to risk so as to be able to save a situation. I’m that kind of a person who would work at night just to make sure that a friend or any other person for that matter who is stuck gets help in real time. I have the ability to do a lot of things because I measure my strength clearly so as to determine if there is the need for extra efforts. Also, I believe in being honest with myself and those that need my help. I firmly believe that we must be clear on what we can do and what is beyond our abilities. This about value and where we can apply them, as such I make effort to remain real to mu values to avert any downfalls. Overall, I do my best to ensure that I demonstrate honesty, growth, sincerity, and transformation.
Compassion
I like to make my friends embolden and powerful and not diminished and powerless. I must say that I have all it takes to care genuinely for others in a way that is selfless; I do this because of a genuine desire to assist as well as improve the life of people. It may get or not get me very far in y life, but I have realized that genuine care for other people can inspire them, promote goodness, and serve as an example. Mostly it is imperative to show a person who needs that you care for him or her. I believe that the good or bad things we do to people affect their lives more significantly in a way that we may not know. Therefore, I choose to care genuinely for people to ensure positive impact in their lives. I know I have all that it takes to care for a person; it is an inner instinct to do so since it is part of my personality, I call it empathy. I caring for people is not a choice I have to make but because I feel it is a predisposition to do so. It makes me feel better about myself, connect with other people and improves their lives. There is so much help needed out there, and this is why I believe that it is imperative that I should do whatever I can to assist through the donation of my skills. It is simply by finding ways to express love to others, be it a child, family member, friend, co-worker, or even a complete stranger. For me, showing a little care is all that matters.
Shared vision and action
I try to get all people engaged and also seek their ideas and recognition. Building a good team to manage a task is the other best thing I could do over and over. With the ...

2. LEADERSHIP’S EXCURSION 2
When taking charge of something important such as an event or job assignment, people
seek those who are capable of guiding them to the proper solution. People seek someone who
thinks clearly and is responsible for their actions. They also search for one who has a sensible
plan concerning their future and that of the company for which they work. A person possessing
qualities such as these would make a great leader. In all aspects of life, someone is needed to
carefully guide others through situations that may be difficult. The world greatly depends on
leaders to encourage and motivate others to reach the ultimate goal of professional and personal
success.
Many people believe those who lead are born to do so. They firmly believe leadership is
natural and cannot be taught. However, there are those who believe the opposite. They believe
leaders can be created from experiences they may have had throughout their lives. Events that
may have been positive or negative can contribute to one’s ability to lead. These experiences
may greatly increase one’s determination to lead. There are numerous tests and assessments
available which can determine one’s style of leadership and if they possess the traits as well.
Some of them can decipher whether one would lead aggressively or conscientiously. After
completing several assessments, I discovered things about myself I was unaware of. Once I
finished an assessment on leadership styles, it revealed I had a free-rein style of leading. This
means I am more likely to emphasize the importance of my subordinates rather than placing the
focus on myself (McGraw-Hill Primus, 2004). Initially, I did not believe this style suited me, but
as I continued to read, I began to agree with the results. Many leaders do not feel obligated to
allow employee participation when it comes to making suggestions for projects or meetings.
They prefer to have complete control, and do not see the need to consult others. This style is
3. LEADERSHIP’S EXCURSION 3
known as directive and is not very popular with other employees. They may feel their opinion is
of no importance which could cause employees to feel neglected. The third and final style of
leadership is known as participative, and puts equal emphasis on the leader and the followers.
Before completing the assessment, I was sure this style best described me. However, as a leader,
I believe I would allow the subordinates to contribute more to the changes and improvements of
the company. This would help create a stable and pleasant work environment. If there are any
additions or changes to be made, as the leader I can always make those later.
People seek to become leaders for various reasons and have social motives to support
them (McGraw-Hill Primus, 2004). They may be interested in securing their financial future or
for personal reasons. Some desire to lead because they have the need to be in a position of
power. They hope to gain some sense of respect and authority which may cause them to become
an authoritarian leadership style. Others thrive to lead simply because they have a passion to
help others. Their motive is to assist any and all who are in need of direction. Once I completed
an assessment on this topic, my score indicated I am more inclined to lead to achieve success.
My scores for social power and affiliation were nearly the same. I completely agree with the
results of this assessment, because I am goal oriented. I set high goals to achieve in hopes that I
can help others do the same. I do not feel the need to be in complete control at all times, and I do
not seek to form relationships to gain professional acceptance. My passion to help others
outweighs my need for control.
Another assessment I completed was concerning one’s emotional intelligence or EI.
When a person is aware of their emotional intelligence they are able to maintain their feelings at
4. LEADERSHIP’S EXCURSION 4
a stable level. A person with a high level of emotional intelligence is able to remain calm when a
conflict may arise (McGraw-Hill Primus, 2004). They are able to be level-headed and listen to
both sides thoroughly. They also tend to be aware of others emotions, too. This helps a leader
be considerate of how an employee may decipher good or bad news. When completing the
assessment, it revealed I had a score of 76 for my emotion al intelligence. This score is in a good
range, but does need improvement. I do tend to think before I speak, because I do not want to
offend anyone. It is best to not say anything if it is not positive. The final assessment I
completed was on the styles of conflict. The purpose is to determine how people react when
faced with a dilemma. Once I finished the assessment, I learned I would most likely collaborate
with others when a conflict arises. I believe this is correct, because I would be sure to carefully
consider all the facts before coming to a conclusion. People have different reactions to various
situations. The way one feels may determine just how they resolve conflict on that particular
day. This is one reason that keeping your emotional intelligence under control is useful. Leaders
must make decisions based on facts only. It is unethical for them to allow their emotions to
become an obstacle. One should have a clear mind and base their decision solely on the facts
associated. When one uses their emotions instead, an irreversible decision may be made. This
could cause unforeseen damage to the employee/employer relationship and the business, also.
When employees notice a leader’s ability to handle conflict well, they are seen as fair and tend to
gain much more respect.
I have always admired a leader’s ability to gain the attention of others. It is one of the
characteristics that are appealing to others. Becoming a leader has been a work in progress for
me. I have always been afraid of being the center of attention, so I would shy away from any
5. LEADERSHIP’S EXCURSION 5
roles which pertained to leading others. However, I noticed I was very skilled academically
while attending high school. Others always looked to me to assist them with homework or
projects. Also, when working in groups, I noticed that others relied heavily on my opinion. I did
not quite understand why others were so interested in what I had to say. After several months of
being asked to help a classmate, I decided to ask my teacher could I tutor. This was the first time
I stepped into a leadership role. Highly pleased, my teacher was eager to accommodate me. She
asked which subject I preferred to tutor and I answered any. Many classmates could not quite
understand why I would want to do such a thing as tutor. I simply explained I just like to help
others and learning is as fun as you make it. Initially, I was unsure if my peers would allow me
to have some control and assist them with their work. I was delighted they were relieved to have
the help, and I continued to tutor the remainder of high school. This experience was one that was
fulfilling to me, because it gave me the opportunity to help others while enjoying myself.
Another time when I was needed to lead was when my mother injured herself. This event
happened recently while she was at work. As the fourth of five children, I never expected to be
the primary person to care for my mother. However, when she needed someone to help her get
to the hospital, I was there. Just arriving home from work, I immediately ceased what I was
doing to go accompany my mother. Once arriving on the scene, I asked where my siblings were.
She replied “I called you, Kesha, because I knew you would come”. Those few words meant a
great deal to me. It let me know my mother depends on me to guide her back to health.
Although I am a mother of six, I made sure to take my mother to her follow-up appointments,
because I wanted her to know that I am always available to guide her no matter the
circumstances. Knowing that others depend on you in tumultuous times is refreshing and gives
6. LEADERSHIP’S EXCURSION 6
me a sense of accomplishment.
There are numerous leaders in the world that I admire for many different reasons. Some
are decisive, organized, and responsible. However, there are not many people who have
influenced my personal life. One person who has been greatly influential is my mother, Karene.
She has proven to be resilient and determined throughout her career as a certified nursing
assistant. A single mother of five, she has always maintained employment and a vehicle of her
own. My mother is very organized and frugal when it comes to spending. She is a very humble
person who does not like to accept gifts from others. She is the epitome of an independent
person who remains focused and motivated to reach her professional goals. My mother has
never indulged in tobacco or alcohol products, and that is one of the primary reasons she has
influenced me. I admire her ability to say no and aspire to adopt some of the leadership traits
that she has. The people who have influenced my life the greatest would be my six children. It
takes a certain amount of maturity and independence to take care of this many children.
Motherhood is something I am quite proud to be a part of because the rewards are endless. All
of my children are special in their own way, but one of them has had a greater impact on my life
than the others. It is my eight year old son Kevell who was unexpectedly born with Down
syndrome. When first hearing the news of his diagnosis, I began to worry whether I was capable
of raising a child with a disability. I was unsure if I had the emotional and mental strength to
handle medical problems. I was also unsure how others would treat him. What I was sure of is I
was not going to let anyone harm or take advantage of him. Needless to say, everyone who has
graced Kevell’s presence has been in complete amazement. Raising my children has been a
journey that is exuding surprises from every direction. It is the one thing in life I have great
7. LEADERSHIP’S EXCURSION 7
confidence. My mother and children are people who will continuously provide me with
leadership skills to last a lifetime.
I have made promising progress in my excursion to become an effective leader.
However, there are still a few things which require improvement. In becoming a better leader, I
need to be more welcome to change. I have a tendency to be apprehensive when change is on
the horizon, because I am so accustomed to being in a comfort zone. Changes are constantly
being made within companies and I am determined to be more welcoming to it. Another issue I
face when leading others is becoming more vocal. I have been shy most of my life, and I tend to
speak at a low tone. I am very aware of what I need to say and how to say it, but my nerves
become an obstacle each time. I have been practicing speaking louder when talking to others so
they will fully understand my point. My main flaw as a leader is public speaking. It is
something that invigorates a great deal of fear within me. I always worry how I sound and look
when presenting information to others. I know I have a good speaking voice, but I must learn to
use it more. To make me more comfortable, I decided to do my presentations for school in front
of people who are unfamiliar to me. I prefer for those who do not know me well to evaluate my
progress. Fortunately, I have received only positive feedback. I also have been recording myself
when speaking, and both things have given me great confidence. I am actually looking forward
to my next presentation so I can show my classmates how much I have improved. There are
always improvements that can be made to one’s leadership skills. People just have to be willing
to accept them.
Overall, learning about leadership has been more useful than first expected. It is key to
8. LEADERSHIP’S EXCURSION 8
lead others in the way you want to be led. Leaders are instrumental and guiding others into the
proper direction in the business world. They are seen as creative and inspiring minds that are
needed to rejuvenate an employee’s appreciation for their job. Keeping control of one’s
emotions and remaining unbiased when conflict arises are essential for a leader. The world looks
at leaders as innovators and anyone can become a historical leader if enough time is invested.
