Le Château de Versailles was chosen as the new royal residence by Louis XIV to gain more control over the nobility and distance himself from Paris residents. He required the nobility to live at Versailles for parts of each year and instituted strict etiquette for elaborate daily ceremonies surrounding waking, dressing, eating and sleeping.
